Samsung and SK hynix may return up to 300 trillion won to shareholders, fueled by record earnings and AI memory demand, with margin balances hitting new highs.

The arithmetic is staggering by any standard. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are poised to unveil shareholder returns that could collectively reach 300 trillion won — roughly $212 billion — with the bulk of that sum expected to come from Samsung alone. Analysts cited by the Korea Times peg Samsung's potential distribution at up to 200 trillion won, while SK hynix could add another 100 trillion won to the tally.

Those projections rest on blockbuster second-quarter earnings. Samsung booked an operating profit of 89.5 trillion won, while SK hynix delivered 60.5 trillion won. Both companies have formal payout commitments in place — Samsung pledged to return half of its free cash flow to shareholders across 2024 through 2026, and SK hynix has adopted a similar policy for the 2025–2027 window. KB Securities analysts see Samsung distributing at least 100 trillion won, which could push the dividend yield past 7 percent.

Leveraged Bets Pile Into Seoul

The prospect of record payouts is already rippling through South Korea's brokerage system. Margin balances for stock purchases swelled to 309.3 trillion won, up from 274.4 trillion won on August 3, according to the Korea Financial Investment Association. The surge is attributed squarely to the Samsung and SK hynix recovery — Samsung's margin balance alone climbed 9.4 percent since July 31 to 4.88 trillion won.

KB Securities analyst Kim Dong-won argues that investor anxieties have largely dissipated and expects a re-rating of chip stocks starting in the third quarter. Foreign investors appear to agree: net purchases of Korean equities reached roughly 8 trillion won last week, even as some retail traders positioned for downside.

A Week of Whiplash

The stock closed Friday at 274,500 won, capping a seven-day advance of 19 percent. Yet that rally still leaves the shares 27 percent below their 52-week high of 374,500 won, set on June 19. Over twelve months the gain compounds to 288 percent, and the year-to-date advance stands at 130 percent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Samsung Electronics?

The recent surge follows a turbulent stretch. Early June brought a broad KOSPI sell-off severe enough to trigger a trading halt, with Samsung shedding significant value in a single session. The tape has since flipped decisively. Still, the stock trades below its 50-day moving average of 285,542.61 won, suggesting the market has yet to embrace full-blown euphoria.

The $200 Billion Broadcom Gambit

Thursday's disclosure of a partnership with Broadcom valued at $200 billion for memory and foundry technologies has added fresh fuel. The deal targets next-generation AI infrastructure and arrives as Nvidia locked in a separate multi-year agreement with the SK Group worth up to $500 billion for HBM supplies and AI factory construction — a reminder of how fiercely the race for AI memory chips is being contested.

Samsung's technology roadmap shows accelerating momentum. On August 11, the company revealed it had achieved an 80 percent "golden yield" on its sixth-generation HBM4 chips — four months ahead of schedule and a marked improvement from sub-60 percent at February's market launch. At the Future of Memory and Storage conference, Samsung unveiled its "zHBM" concept, stacking HBM directly vertically over AI accelerators, alongside the V10 BV-NAND with over 400 layers.

Market Share Recaptured

Counterpoint Research data shows Samsung reclaimed the global DRAM crown in the second quarter with a 39.4 percent market share, leaving SK hynix at 26 percent. The corporate scorecard reinforces the narrative: group revenue hit 171.5 trillion won with operating profit of 89.5 trillion won, powered by a 250-fold profit surge in the semiconductor division.

Mirae Asset Securities analyst Kim Young-gun lifted his price target Friday, forecasting third-quarter operating profit of 120 trillion won on rising DRAM prices and expanding foundry orders.

Record Spending and a Talent Grab

Samsung's first-half 2026 research and development outlays reached 27.3627 trillion won, up sharply from 18.06 trillion won a year earlier. Capital expenditures hit a record 28 trillion won as the company fortifies its semiconductor manufacturing lead.

Samsung Electronics at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The AI push extends to personnel. Samsung recruited Han Bo-hyung from Seoul National University as a fellow for AI model development, and poached Hahn Tai-rin from Meta as Executive Vice President to oversee AI-ready data infrastructure.

Friday's 2.4 percent gain came after SanDisk (Western Digital) projected gross margins around 80 percent by 2030, prompting a sector-wide reassessment of memory chip valuations.

The Inflation Question

The profit boom is reaching the workforce. Samsung reached a preliminary wage agreement granting employees 10.5 percent of operating profit in shares plus a 1.5 percent cash bonus. Economist Hyosung Kwon cautioned that such outsized performance-linked compensation at Samsung and SK hynix could create a macroeconomic inflation channel, potentially influencing the Bank of Korea's rate policy.

For investors, the central question remains whether the promised distributions justify current valuations. With the stock still meaningfully below its 50-day average despite the recent rally, the market appears to be weighing record payouts, historic investment, and a resurgent DRAM franchise against the lingering scars of June's volatility.
