SanDisk shares bore the brunt of a broad technology selloff on Friday, closing at EUR 1,160.00 — a single-day decline of 7.2%. The slump came as investors reassessed the durability of massive artificial intelligence spending, with semiconductor makers among the hardest-hit names in the S&P 500, according to reporting from the Associated Press.

Two forces combined to pressure growth stocks. Hotter-than-expected September inflation data pushed bond yields higher, weighing on rate-sensitive names, while growing skepticism about whether the enormous outlays on AI infrastructure can be sustained at current levels rattled confidence across the chip sector. The pattern is a familiar one on Wall Street: when macro data turns and doubts surface about multi-billion-dollar spending programs, the entire industry gets marked down with little discrimination.

A DRAM Headache That Misses SanDisk's Core

The memory segment had already been under a cloud for days before Friday's rout. Reports that Chinese manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) had made progress on denser memory cell designs stoked fears of intensifying global competition. As Reuters reported, memory-related names led losses among US chipmakers earlier in the week.

Yet the market's blanket punishment appears to have overlooked a key distinction. CXMT's reported advances primarily concern the DRAM space and planned products for AI data centers. SanDisk's operating core remains firmly anchored in NAND flash technology — meaning fears of direct displacement competition in that particular DRAM segment barely touch the company's franchise.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?

Product Momentum Beyond the Data Center

The company's own recent moves suggest an operating reality more grounded than the frantic trading floors imply. On Tuesday, SanDisk unveiled its new Guardian Series of microSD cards, purpose-built for continuous recording in dashcams and home surveillance cameras, with capacities spanning 32 to 512 gigabytes. The launch underscores a strength investors seem to be discounting: SanDisk is not solely dependent on the volatile capital-spending cycles of hyperscalers, but serves established consumer and security segments as well.

Earlier in the month, management also published its own commentary on conditions in the NAND market, along with its outlook for flash demand and shipment volumes — a signal that the company is keeping a close eye on industry cycles and retains room to maneuver in a demanding environment.

A separate milestone arrived on October 14, when SanDisk announced a partnership with Meta. Under the arrangement, SanDisk will act as the exclusive supplier of advanced flash memory solutions for Meta's VR glasses, with a market launch planned for spring 2027.

Analyst Support Ahead of the Print

Before the latest pullback, at least one analyst was turning more bullish. Vijay Rakesh of Mizuho raised his price target on SanDisk from $1,875 to $2,050 on October 5, reaffirming his buy rating.

Friday's losses have left the stock trading 17% below its 50-day moving average. Hard evidence about the company's operating health is now imminent: SanDisk will report results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 on October 29, 2026. The conference call, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Pacific time, gives management a stage to lay out actual flash memory demand and counter mounting market doubts with concrete figures.

Until then, broader market currents are likely to set the direction. Whether the recent selling wave overshot the mark is a question only the numbers can answer.
