SanDisk shares climbed 4.4% on Wednesday, riding a broader recovery across memory-chip equities rather than any company-specific announcement. The advance came as investors leaned on hopes for sustained artificial intelligence spending and a tighter supply picture for memory, according to media reports.

The distinction matters. When the market re-rates an entire sector, individual stocks can benefit without news of their own, and SanDisk's move alongside other memory names suggests the gain reflects shifting expectations rather than improved fundamentals.

Two Sides of the Same AI Bet

The bullish case rests on expectations of continued AI investment and resilient memory pricing. SanDisk had already joined a rally in memory stocks a day earlier, with media coverage linking the move to tighter supply expectations and positioning ahead of upcoming earnings.

That is a coherent market narrative — tighter supply could support prices. But expectations about the industry backdrop are neither reported revenue nor declared profit at SanDisk.

On the skeptical side sits the very same investment boom. Bloomberg reported fresh investor doubts over whether heavy AI spending will generate adequate returns, a concern that helps explain the weakness in memory stocks since the third quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?

So this is not simply optimists against pessimists. Both camps are looking at the same trend but emphasizing different things: one side sees additional demand, the other questions its economic sustainability. Wednesday's recovery reflects a friendlier weighting of those arguments, not a resolution of the debate.

A Competitor's Financing Plan Hits the Brakes

News from the competitive field arrived on Friday, when SK Hynix reportedly halted its review of a possible US initial public offering for its NAND subsidiary Solidigm, along with a pre-IPO financing. The company cited market conditions as the reason, according to Reuters.

The decision could reduce a potential funding source for additional NAND capacity — relevant for SanDisk as a competing NAND supplier. The shelved project concerned the examination of capital raising, not a completed listing.

Separately, Cantor Fitzgerald lowered its price target for SanDisk to US$2,200 from US$2,900, media reports said, while keeping its "Overweight" rating. The lower target therefore does not come with a downgrade of the recommendation.

Meta Partnership and a Filing to Note

Roughly two weeks ago, SanDisk announced a partnership with Meta Platforms, according to media reports. The company is set to become the exclusive supplier of flash memory solutions for the Meta VR Glasses, with microSD Express cards and USB-C flash drives planned for the glasses' intended market launch in spring 2027.

A mandatory disclosure dated October 20 concerned Bernard Shek, SanDisk's Chief Legal Officer. Upon vesting of shares, 322 shares were withheld to satisfy a tax obligation, according to company statements. Shek subsequently held 25,266 shares. The reported transaction thus served the tax settlement of that allotment.

October 29 as the Next Yardstick

The next confirmed release date is October 29, when SanDisk will report results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 after the market close, as the company announced about a month ago. The date is not a new price driver, but it gives the current shift in expectations a near-term reference point.

That is when industry hopes and company performance can be told apart more clearly. What will SanDisk say about its business? And how well does it match expectations for supply and prices? Wednesday's rally does not pre-empt a reliable answer.

The better measure, then, is not the size of the gain alone. What counts is whether SanDisk's reporting supports the friendlier view of the memory market. Until then, the day's advance is chiefly a vote of confidence in the sector backdrop — not confirmation of it.
