SanDisk's 12% Retreat: Price Targets Trimmed, Buy Ratings Intact

SanDisk shares fell 12% yesterday, caught in a broad pullback from technology and AI-related names. Reuters framed the move as part of a wider flight from risk assets, while media coverage also tied the pressure on the memory maker to a warning from rival Kioxia. Goldman Sachs and BofA Securities cut their price targets to $2,000 apiece — down from $2,200 and $2,500 respectively — yet both kept their buy recommendations in place.

That combination says plenty. The analysts are reining in their valuation yardsticks without abandoning their fundamentally positive view. BofA attributed the move to valuation concerns at a late stage of the cycle. That is not a claim that the business has already cracked; it is a caution against extrapolating strong results indefinitely.

Kioxia's Warning Lands on the Whole Sector

Pressure also arrived from the industry backdrop. According to media reports, Kioxia flagged a marked slowdown in NAND selling-price growth and guided to operating profit below analyst expectations. That news came explicitly from Kioxia, not SanDisk — but it helps explain why investors might scrutinize SanDisk's valuation more critically too. Treating Kioxia's comments as an immediate profit warning from SanDisk would go beyond the documented facts; equally, ignoring the sector trend because of strong in-house numbers would be just as convenient.

Broader anxieties added fuel. AP reported fears that valuations across AI-linked companies have climbed too far, while high interest rates could slow the buildout of data centers. That framing addressed the technology landscape as a whole, not any company-specific disclosure from SanDisk. Reports also cited a weak outlook from Intel as a further drag.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?

The Operating Counterweight

Against that skepticism stands a set of hard numbers. On Thursday, SanDisk reported revenue of $11.031 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 23% from the prior quarter and 378% year over year. GAAP net income came in at $8.101 billion, with diluted GAAP earnings of $52.60 per share. On the adjusted, non-GAAP basis the company uses, diluted earnings per share were $49.51.

Segment detail rounded out the picture: Datacenter generated $4.802 billion, Edge contributed $5.832 billion, and the Consumer business added $397 million.

The question for investors is therefore not whether SanDisk grew briskly — that is settled. It is how durable expectations remain as skepticism toward AI spending and sector pricing mounts. For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, the company guided to revenue of $12.2 billion to $12.6 billion and non-GAAP diluted earnings of $55.00 to $57.00 per share, both on a pre-split basis. That is a forecast, not a result already banked, and the projected increase is a positive signal rather than proof of delivery. Still, the guidance undercuts any thesis that SanDisk itself has announced an imminent downturn.

Buybacks: Capital Action, Not a Safety Net

The quarterly filing submitted yesterday also documents share repurchases totaling $5.0 billion in the quarter through October 2. That is a concrete capital measure rather than a mere statement of intent. The remaining authorization, however, is neither a commitment on the timing of further purchases nor a floor under the share price — treating it as a shield against further valuation markdowns would go too far.

All told, neither the all-clear nor alarmism holds up. SanDisk pairs strong reported results and a forward outlook that reaches beyond them with a substantial buyback framework, while analysts trim their targets and the sector backdrop feeds doubt. The operating strength deserves weight — it does not amount to a license for any valuation.
