SanDisk's 31% Retreat Masks a Structural Bet on Exploding Data Demand

SanDisk closed at EUR 1,420.00, down 1.4%, as NAND wafer prices fell and Toshiba capacity talk weighed on memory-chip stocks.

A wave of selling swept through memory-chip equities last week, dragging SanDisk shares well below their record highs. Yet the triggers had little to do with the company itself: softening spot prices for NAND wafers, talk of Toshiba doubling its nearline hard-drive capacity, and a possible strike at a Micron plant in Taiwan combined to spook investors across the storage sector.

By Friday's close, SanDisk finished at EUR 1,420.00, down 1.4% on the day and roughly 31% beneath its 52-week peak of EUR 2,060.00.

What Actually Moved the Stock

The clearest pressure came from the spot market. According to media reports, 512Gb TLC NAND wafers shed 2.9% in value over the course of the week. Add in mounting concern that supply could grow faster than expected, plus rising US Treasury yields weighing on tech names broadly, and the sector had ample reason to pull back.

Toshiba's reported plan to roughly double its production capacity for nearline drives by fiscal 2027 compounded the gloom, while reports of a potential strike at a Micron facility in Taiwan added another layer of unease on Wednesday.

Friday brought a partial reprieve. Falling oil prices and rising US equity futures steadied semiconductor stocks in pre-market trading, with investors stepping back in. The softer crude backdrop followed a statement from US President Donald Trump indicating Washington has no intention of launching a military strike against Iran before the midterm elections.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?

The Demand Story Beneath the Noise

Strip away the short-term jitters and SanDisk's own messaging points in a very different direction. The company said Wednesday that data centers now account for the bulk of demand for NAND bits, with AI infrastructure buildouts and increasingly sophisticated devices underpinning the market.

Management expects the global flash-memory market to top USD 300 billion in 2026 and approach USD 500 billion by 2027. Eric Cherrstrom, a SanDisk vice president, argued in a technical piece on Wednesday that NAND demand and technology-driven bit growth signal a fundamentally reshaped market model.

That structural view also finds backing on the analyst side. Vijay Rakesh of Mizuho raised his price target on SanDisk from USD 1,875 to USD 2,050 on Tuesday, reaffirming an "Outperform" rating.

The argument that hard drives pose an existential threat to flash memory misses how modern architectures work: spinning disks and fast flash storage frequently serve distinct requirements. If anything, Toshiba's capacity expansion signals that global data hunger keeps accelerating.

The October 29 Verdict

What the recent turbulence has not done is damage the long-term growth drivers tied to data-center expansion. What it has done is set up a clear catalyst.

SanDisk announced roughly two weeks ago that it will report first-quarter fiscal 2027 results on October 29, 2026, after the US market close. That print should reveal how much the swinging spot prices have already touched the company's top and bottom lines — and offer a read on actual pricing and margin trends.

For investors willing to look past the sector's characteristic volatility, the pullback represents a rational reassessment rather than a verdict on the business. The panic of recent days does little to diminish the company's longer-term opportunity.
