SAP's Cloud Order Book Is Booming — but the Year's Hardest Quarter Hasn't Been Booked Yet

SAP's cloud backlog rose 28% in Q3 2026 and guidance was refined to the top end, but CFO Asam flags that half of bookings typically land in Q4.

SAP closed its third quarter of 2026 with a cloud order book worth €24.1 billion, a figure that has given bulls plenty to work with. What that headline number does not settle is the question chief financial officer Dominik Asam raised on October 22: roughly half of the year's bookings typically land in the final three months. For investors, that is the key caveat hanging over an otherwise strong set of results — a soft mood in the market could weigh on signings and, by extension, on the growth trajectory heading into the following year.

The current cloud backlog, reported on October 21, grew 28% year on year. In constant-currency terms the advance was 26%. Cloud revenue climbed 26% to €6.668 billion, part of group revenue of €10.3 billion, while earnings per share came in at €1.96 and the non-IFRS operating profit reached €3.030 million.

Media coverage suggested the figures beat expectations. The share price reaction, however, was also caught up in broader weakness across technology stocks and worries about the year-end quarter — leaving the positive operating numbers facing both a company-specific caveat and an unfavourable market backdrop.

Guidance Raised at the Top End, Not the Range

Alongside the quarterly release, SAP said it expects both cloud revenue and combined cloud and software revenue for 2026 to land at the upper end of its existing guidance ranges. That is a refinement within the current framework, not an expansion of the range itself. The more favourable revenue outlook and Asam's caution on the closing quarter do not contradict each other — they address different parts of the business picture.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

A Split Verdict From the Analyst Community

Reactions on October 22 captured how wide the range of views remains. DZ Bank set a fair value of €170 and rated the stock "Sell." UBS kept a "Neutral" stance with a €201 price target. Other houses were markedly more optimistic and lifted their targets to between €235 and €250, keeping their recommendations on the positive side. No uniform valuation picture emerged despite the strong cloud growth.

Goldman Sachs added its own vote of confidence on October 23, raising its target to €258 and maintaining a "Buy" rating. Analyst Mohammed Moawalla pointed to the continued strength of the current cloud backlog and SAP's competitive position. That assessment followed the quarterly figures and preceded the company's TechEd event, so it should not be read as an endorsement of the product functions unveiled there.

TechEd Showcases AI Agents — With a 2027 Timetable

At TechEd on Tuesday, SAP presented new capabilities for Joule Work, Joule Studio and the SAP Business AI Platform, sharpening its strategy for more heavily automated enterprise workflows. Among the additions are orchestration of AI agents, control and governance functions, and extensions to the Business Data Cloud — tying together the coordination of automated tasks, their oversight and access to business data. SAP also introduced the SAP-RPT-2.0 model and a model for forecasting time-based business metrics, extending the focus beyond simply operating applications to processing business data and preparing operational decisions.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The crucial distinction for investors is between presentation and availability: several functions are not planned until 2027. The staggered schedule limits what can be inferred in the near term. The strategic direction is becoming more concrete, but its economic impact cannot yet be quantified — and the earnings release contains no separate revenue evidence for the TechEd innovations.

The Test Comes on January 28

What separates the two storylines is timing. The cloud growth has already been reported; the commercial effect of the new AI functions has not. The next scheduled results date is January 28, 2027, when preliminary figures for the fourth quarter and the full 2026 financial year are due. Until then, the bookings trend in the year's most heavily weighted quarter remains the central yardstick for how durable SAP's growth path really is.
