SAP shares climbed on Wednesday, drawing fresh support from a wave of bullish analyst revisions issued a day after the software maker's third-quarter results. Two separate tallies of the day's move put the advance at either 2.5% or 3.4%, with the discrepancy reflecting the timing of each snapshot rather than any disagreement about direction. What matters more for investors is the reason behind the bounce: the gains rest on hard operating numbers, not merely on a friendlier mood toward technology stocks.

Two Houses, One Direction

Deutsche Bank Research lifted its price target to €235 from €200 while keeping its "Buy" rating, with analyst Johannes Schaller reaffirming the recommendation. Berenberg moved in parallel, raising its target to €240 from €205 and likewise maintaining a "Buy" stance. Oddo BHF joined the chorus, with analyst Nicolas David setting a €242 target in response to the strong quarterly report. All three firms tied their higher valuations to the business figures rather than to the share price's recent gyrations.

The new information for investors lies less in the reiterated buy calls than in the raised targets themselves — though a price target remains an analyst's assessment, not a promise about where the stock will trade.

The Numbers Beneath the Optimism

At the heart of the revisions is SAP's cloud engine. Cloud revenue for the third quarter of 2026 rose 26% to €6.668 billion, while the current cloud backlog — contracted business not yet recognized as revenue — grew 28% to €24.144 billion. Group revenue reached €10.27 billion, up 13% year on year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

That cloud is expanding faster than the company as a whole explains why the segment carries outsized weight in how the quarter is judged. The backlog adds a second dimension: it captures future business already secured by contract, so the positive impulse is not confined to a single quarter's top line. It is not, however, the same as revenue already booked.

Profit growth rounded out the picture. Non-IFRS operating profit climbed to €3.03 billion, an 18% increase — a faster pace than group revenue. Higher analyst targets are therefore meeting rising sales, a larger contracted cloud pipeline and a beefier operating result, giving the more optimistic valuation multiple operating metrics to stand on.

A Sector Headwind in the Rearview

The stock's earlier softness had little to do with SAP's own performance. dpa-AFX attributed the interim weakness to the international technology climate, citing market reactions to quarterly reports from Tesla, Meta and IBM as well as losses on Asian tech exchanges. That outside noise temporarily overshadowed the strong quarterly figures.

Two distinct forces are thus pulling at SAP at once: company-specific results and analyst responses on one side, and the broader mood toward tech equities on the other. For investors, the key distinction is whether a price move stems from a changed view of SAP's business or from the sector backdrop. Wednesday's target hikes — and the operating figures behind them — point to the former.
