SAP Stretches Energy-Market Support to 2030 as Cloud Backlog and AI Governance Take Center Stage

SAP extends fee-based support for German energy-market solutions to end-2030 but excludes new regulatory needs like MaBiS Hub; Q3 cloud backlog rose 28%.

SAP has extended optional, fee-based maintenance and support for its existing German energy-market solutions through 31 December 2030 — a commitment that comes with a firm caveat: new regulatory requirements such as MaBiS Hub are explicitly not covered. The distinction matters. SAP is pledging to keep tending to systems already in place, not to shepherd them through every forthcoming rule change, so customers weighing the offer should read the fine print as carefully as the end date.

The extension applies to users of the existing German energy-market products and remains both optional and chargeable. For planning purposes, the length of the runway is only half the story; the scope of what is actually included is the other. Anyone who must satisfy new regulatory demands cannot infer coverage of those demands from this renewal. From an investor's vantage point, the announcement is best filed as a service commitment to legacy installations — not a signal about how those systems will function down the road, a claim the stated exception does not support.

A Separate Track: Keeping AI Agents on a Leash

Running in parallel, SAP is pressing ahead on the controlled use of new AI applications, with governance and the supervised execution of AI agents at the core. Company teams are also contributing to the OpenShell codebase, and the Joule Studio runtime environment becomes available to customers and partners in October 2026. These efforts sit on a different track from the energy-market support extension and should not be bundled into a single product promise.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

How much customers care about that control layer was underscored by CFO Dominik Asam in comments to Reuters. Clients are asking with growing frequency about the provenance and governance of the AI models they deploy, he said, noting that SAP integrates more than 70 models from a range of providers. Product pledges, however, are not the same as hard results: dpa-AFX reported that the absence of metrics on the development of SAP's own AI offerings has weighed on the stock.

Cloud Backlog Provides the Bull Case

The numbers behind the optimism came from the third quarter of 2026, when SAP posted a current cloud backlog of EUR 24.1 billion — a 28% increase, or 26% at constant currencies. Cloud revenue climbed 26%, cloud ERP suite revenue rose 29%, and total revenue advanced 13%. Growth was not confined to the order book, which gives analysts a solid argument for their constructive stance.

Goldman Sachs lifted its price target to EUR 258 from EUR 230, reaffirming a buy rating, with analyst Mohammed Moawalla pointing to the strength of the current cloud backlog and SAP's competitive position. Deutsche Bank Research had already raised its target to EUR 235 a day earlier, also keeping a buy recommendation.

Why the Stock Wavered

Yet the market's reaction was uneven. Media reports noted that SAP shares briefly slipped into negative territory despite the strong backlog and the higher targets, pressured by cautious signals on expected cloud backlog growth in the fourth quarter, profit-taking, and a weak technology backdrop. The divergence is no contradiction: analysts are crediting business strength already delivered, while the market is pricing the next leg of growth. What counts for SAP's valuation, then, is not only the quarter just reported but how the cloud backlog develops into the year-end — and whether the AI story eventually comes with figures attached.
