Seagate Trims Debt and Lifts Payout as Analysts Split on How Long the Storage Squeeze Lasts

Seagate Technology is converting an unusually rich cash flow into a stronger balance sheet and a bigger dividend, even as two of Wall Street's best-known research houses disagree over how durable the current hard-drive shortage really is. The company's fiscal first-quarter 2027 results, released today, landed alongside a pair of price-target cuts that point to a subtler debate: whether scarce capacity alone can carry earnings, or whether shipment growth and cost discipline matter just as much.

A profit surge that the market shrugged at

Revenue for the quarter reached $4.233 billion, with GAAP net income of $1.761 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $7.68, backed by an adjusted gross margin of 57.8% and an adjusted operating margin of 50.7%. The Wall Street Journal ties the jump in profitability to demand for data-storage components feeding the build-out of AI infrastructure.

Investors, though, were not immediately impressed. CNBC reported after-hours losses yesterday despite the beat on earnings expectations. Media reports have floated profit-taking after the stock's earlier run as one possible factor, though that cannot be confirmed as the explanation.

Cash goes to work on the balance sheet

Operating cash flow totaled $1.7 billion, with free cash flow of $1.5 billion. Seagate retired $1.2 billion of debt during the quarter and followed up after the period closed with a further $750 million of repayments, leaving gross debt at $1.6 billion. Shareholders received $568 million in total returns over the reporting period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Seagate Technology?

The quarterly dividend rises roughly 3% to $0.76 per share, payable on January 7, 2027 — a direct boost for income investors that complements the deleveraging.

Guidance points higher

For the fiscal second quarter, management projects revenue of $4.8 billion, give or take $100 million on either side, and adjusted earnings per share of $9.20, with a band of plus or minus $0.20. That implies further growth from the quarter just reported.

Management also expects HAMR technology to account for around 50% of nearline exabyte shipments by the end of calendar 2026. Long-term customer agreements underpin the outlook: most of the nearline offering is locked into multi-year contracts, which sharpens visibility on demand without turning the forecast into a delivered result.

The supply gap behind the numbers

Chief financial officer Gianluca Romano, speaking on yesterday's conference call, described a widening gap between demand for cloud storage and available supply. CEO Dave Mosley said capacity beyond the original plan has already been reserved. Seagate intends to ramp production of its 40-terabyte drives over the coming quarters, and the bulk of nearline capacity is already committed through 2028 by storage volume, with some cloud agreements stretching to 2030.

That lock-up gives visibility on utilization — not a guarantee on future revenue or margins. What happens next depends on how quickly Seagate can bring additional capacity online and how competitors' supply evolves. Mosley also expects AI agents deployed worldwide to keep driving storage demand over the long run, a forward-looking management view; the reserved capacity, by contrast, is hard evidence of what customers want to secure today.

Two houses, two horizons

Morgan Stanley kept its overweight rating and its preference for Seagate even as it trimmed its price target to $1,148 from $1,200. The case for hard drives remains intact, in the bank's view: demand outstrips supply, prices are rising, and the HAMR rollout is on schedule. What drove the cut was weaker exabyte growth and smaller cost reductions than anticipated.

The distinction matters. Tight supply can support pricing, but it substitutes for neither higher shipments nor progress on unit costs. Reported prices ran more than 30% above year-earlier levels, exabyte shipments rose 21%, and cost per bit fell 6% — which is precisely why pricing, alongside volume growth, is so central to Seagate's earning power. The target reduction is no retreat from the scarcity thesis; it simply acknowledges that volume growth and cost cuts lagged expectations.

Seagate Technology at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

UBS takes a more cautious view of supply over the longer haul, cutting its target to $750 from $780 while reaffirming a neutral rating. It, too, sees prices climbing against demand that exceeds supply. The divergence lies in the competitive picture: UBS believes industry-wide growth in offered storage capacity could accelerate once Western Digital completes its own HAMR transition — a shift that would alter a key premise of today's tightness.

For calendar 2028, UBS lowered its Seagate revenue forecast to $35.6 billion and its earnings-per-share estimate to $107.41. Both are analyst projections, not company targets.

What the next quarter has to prove

Two time horizons now sit side by side for investors. Near term, reserved capacity and rising prices give Seagate a strong bargaining position. Further out, that position holds only if demand grows faster than the industry's added supply. The company's task for the coming quarter is equally clear: confirm the high profitability and robust cash generation, with a sturdier balance sheet now providing the footing. A skeptical market reaction has only raised the stakes on the next set of actual results.
