Seoul Regulator Puts Solidigm's Nasdaq Ambitions on Hold as SK Hynix Absorbs a Global Chip Selloff
Published on 10/19/2026 at 13:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix finds itself squeezed between regulatory friction at home and a broader reassessment of AI spending abroad. South Korea's financial watchdog has flagged potential conflicts between a proposed Nasdaq listing of the company's Solidigm subsidiary and existing rules governing dual listings, according to media reports. Lee Chan-jin, who heads the regulator, indicated that authorities see the US listing plan running up against the current framework — though no binding official interpretation of the requirements for Korean securities filings has been issued, and no final decision has been reached.
The timing is delicate. Solidigm anchors SK Hynix's NAND business, and a Nasdaq float is intended to open an independent capital-raising channel in the US market. Regulatory reservations about overlapping multiple-listing rules now temper expectations for a smooth path to that listing.
A Bruising Stretch for the Stock
The equity has had a rough run. On the day of the Solidigm headlines, the shares barely budged in Seoul, closing at 1,277,000.00 KRW for a modest gain of 0.4%. That still leaves the stock 57% below its 52-week high of 2,987,000.00 KRW. Earlier in the week, the picture was uglier: the paper dropped 2.0% to 1,246,000.00 KRW as a worldwide semiconductor selloff swept through the sector, though it managed to claw back some ground from much weaker levels hit in early trading.
The trigger was mounting doubt over how AI is being financed on Wall Street. Worries about debt-funded data-center spending and rising financing costs rippled across the industry, dragging down US names including Micron, Broadcom and AMD alongside Asia's chip heavyweights. Investors are increasingly asking how quickly the enormous outlays on AI infrastructure will actually pay off, with potential interest burdens adding to the caution.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Foreign investors offloaded SK Hynix shares worth a combined 5.3565 trillion won during the correction. Seoul's trading session told a more nuanced story than the pre-market gloom suggested: after an initial slide, overseas and institutional buyers stepped in, media reports said, preventing a deeper fall. Measured from the 52-week peak, the stock is now down 58%.
CXMT Looms Over the Memory Trade
Adding to the nerves, Chinese manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies has said it will bring server DDR5 RDIMMs built on its denser DRAM architecture to market by year-end, according to Reuters. Large-scale production capacity at the Chinese firm remains unconfirmed, but the announcement alone was enough to pressure memory stocks globally. CNBC coverage also highlighted broader sector risks — not just Chinese competition but the sheer cost of financing AI infrastructure and fears that memory capacity could outstrip demand later this decade.
Two Banks, One Verdict
Against that backdrop, the sell-side is striking a notably constructive tone. On October 16, Goldman Sachs named SK Hynix among its preferred names in the memory segment despite the industry-wide rout, arguing that investors are overestimating how fast Chinese rivals can close the technology gap. The US investment bank simultaneously tempered hopes for a swift rebound, cautioning that near-term catalysts for a sharp reversal are scarce.
Bernstein reached a similar conclusion the same day, reaffirming its "Buy" rating with a price target of 2,700,000 KRW and betting that the company's positioning at the high end of the market will outweigh current uncertainties.
SK Hynix is not standing still on the technology front. At the OCP Global Summit, the company showcased memory-centric server systems and concepts for next-generation AI memory architectures, and presented research on optimizing 3D FeNAND technology for AI computing workloads. Whether that engineering edge is enough to steady the share price will depend heavily on the willingness of the world's largest technology companies to keep spending — a question that the quarterly results due on October 28 should help illuminate.
