ServiceNow spent this week stacking up AI announcements. Wall Street spent it marking down the stock. The shares shed 3.2% on Friday as the wider software sector came under pressure, capping a stretch in which the company delivered a quarterly report, a cautious near-term growth outlook and a pair of high-profile partnerships — and investors responded by demanding something harder to produce than a press release.

At the center of the unease is the gap between what ServiceNow says it is building and what its numbers currently show. Subscription revenue for the third quarter of 2026 came in at $3,988 million, up 21% year over year, with total revenue of $4,106 million. Those are healthy figures by most standards. They were not enough. Adjusted earnings per share reached just $1.00 against an expected $1.02, and the miss gave the market its first handle on the week's disappointment.

The cRPO Signal That Overshadowed Everything

The more consequential number was buried in the forward-looking metrics. ServiceNow reported cRPO — contracted revenue tied to performance obligations — of $13.65 billion for the third quarter, a gain of 20.5%. For the fourth quarter, however, management guided to 18.5% growth. That deceleration, according to Reuters, did more to sour sentiment than the raised AI target did to lift it.

The company did raise its sights elsewhere. It lifted its 2026 annual contract value target for AI to $1.7 billion and nudged its free cash flow margin outlook up to 36%. Full-year subscription revenue is now projected at $15,780 million to $15,790 million. Improved ambitions on AI and cash generation, set against a growth signal that fell short of expectations — that is the tension investors are pricing, and reading only one side of it misjudges the moment.

Reuters framed the broader tape as well: software stocks fell after the ServiceNow and Fortinet results, with fears about AI-driven disruption weighing on the sector. For a software vendor, an AI narrative is not an automatic credibility upgrade. Partnerships and loftier targets have to be measured against whether they visibly move the business.

Partnerships Arrive, Revenue Lags Behind

ServiceNow did put concrete projects behind its strategy. On Wednesday it unveiled an expanded collaboration with OpenAI, including a ServiceNow plugin for ChatGPT and planned integrations spanning security, risk and AI development, alongside voice-driven applications for governance and risk assessment. A day earlier, the company and Google Cloud announced industry-specific links between ServiceNow Action Fabric and Gemini Enterprise, starting with retail, telecommunications sales and IT.

Some of the OpenAI capabilities are slated for 2027. That matters: functions on a future roadmap should not be valued as though they were already shipping. An integration widens what a product can do; whether customers convert that into additional contracts is a separate question entirely.

One announcement carried more commercial weight than the rest. HPE selected ServiceNow to transform support services across its cloud and AI business. Customer wins of that kind give the strategy substance, though they do not by themselves answer how fast growth will run.

Twelve Analysts, One Direction

The research community registered its verdict on Thursday. At least twelve brokerages cut their price targets following the results, according to Reuters, with media reports citing softer subscription and backlog growth and AI initiatives whose benefits have yet to show through as the sticking points. The reaction was not uniformly negative — a handful of firms raised their targets — but the emphasis shifted decisively toward the quality of growth.

That is not a blanket rejection of ServiceNow's AI course. It is a reordering of the burden of proof. The link connecting technological capability, customer decisions and financial results has to become more convincing.

The existing business offers a foundation for that case. Subscription revenue climbing 21% argues against the simple reading that the core is already cracking. It does not, however, erase the distance between reported growth and what the coming quarters are expected to deliver.

What the Next Report Has to Prove

For the bulls, the arithmetic still works. Hit the raised annual targets, steady the growth rate, and the AI alliances can be read as an extension of a business that continues to expand. The next earnings report becomes the concrete test: it must show how the fourth quarter is shaping up and whether the full-year goals hold. The 2027 OpenAI features mark a further announced horizon to watch.

The bear case carries real weight. Broader technical cooperation guarantees neither fresh demand nor faster customer adoption, and functions with later rollout dates can sit in a long probationary period between announcement and measurable contribution. If investors come to see AI chiefly as a threat to existing software offerings — the industry risk Reuters described — partnership headlines alone will struggle to restore confidence.

None of this turns on the count of new alliances. What decides the story is whether ServiceNow can convert those collaborations into a durable growth narrative, visible in operating results rather than in announcements. Until then, the AI offerings remain an opportunity — and proving their economic effect remains the job at hand.
