ServiceNow's Raised Guidance Meets a Street Asking for Proof
Published on 10/31/2026 at 14:22 | Editorial boerse-global.deServiceNow spent this week trying to sell two stories at once — that its AI push is real, and that its growth is durable. Investors bought neither outright. The stock shed 3.2% on Friday amid broad pressure on the software sector, a move that followed Thursday's slide after the quarterly report landed.
The headline numbers weren't the problem. Subscription revenue for the third quarter of 2026 came in at $3,988 million, up 21% year over year, with total revenue of $4,106 million. What soured the mood was a combination of factors: adjusted earnings per share of $1.00 against an expected $1.02, and a growth outlook that pointed to a slowdown.
The cRPO Signal That Overshadowed Everything
Guidance for current remaining performance obligations — the cRPO metric that tracks near-term revenue expected from existing contracts — drew the sharpest scrutiny. ServiceNow projected 18.5% growth for the fourth quarter, down from 21% in the prior quarter. According to Reuters, that outlook even eclipsed the company's upgraded AI target in investors' minds.
On Wednesday, the enterprise software maker lifted its annual subscription revenue forecast to $15.78–15.79 billion and raised its 2026 AI annual contract value goal to $1.7 billion. It also nudged up its free cash flow margin outlook to 36%. Those upgrades provided a counterweight, but not enough to settle the central question: how fast can growth hold up in the coming quarter?

Partnerships and a Customer Win
ServiceNow didn't sit still on the AI front. Wednesday brought word of an expanded collaboration with OpenAI spanning enterprise AI, cybersecurity, and agent-based applications — including a ServiceNow plugin for ChatGPT and planned integrations for security, risk, and AI development, plus voice-driven tools for governance and risk assessment. A day earlier, the company and Google Cloud announced industry-specific links between ServiceNow Action Fabric and Gemini Enterprise, starting with retail, telecommunications sales, and IT.
Concrete customer traction arrived midweek when HPE selected ServiceNow to transform support services in its Cloud & AI business. That kind of decision lends substance to the strategy, though it doesn't by itself answer how quickly revenue will accelerate.
Twelve Houses, Lower Targets, Split Verdicts
The analyst response was swift and broad. At least twelve research houses cut their price targets following the results, Reuters reported Thursday, with weaker subscription and backlog growth and insufficiently visible AI payoffs among the criticisms. UBS trimmed its target to $140 from $150 while keeping a neutral rating. Citigroup lowered its target to $157 from $170 but maintained its buy recommendation.
ServiceNow at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The split captures the debate neatly. Strong top-line growth and raised full-year goals sit on one side; a missed earnings figure and doubts about the pace of expansion sit on the other. For ServiceNow, the burden of proof has shifted — from announcing partnerships to showing, in the numbers, that they translate into business.
