Shell's Buyback Engine Keeps Running as Divestment Deals Await Their Close

Shell kept its share repurchase machine humming last week, buying back stock on consecutive days even as it lined up the sale of business units whose completion is still pending. The distinction matters for anyone tracking the oil major: the buybacks have happened, while the divestments have not.

On Friday, Shell purchased 932,870 shares on the London Stock Exchange and 477,466 shares on Euronext Amsterdam, all earmarked for cancellation. The move extended purchases made the previous day on both venues. These transactions fall within an existing program — they do not represent the launch of a fresh buyback package.

That nuance separates the confirmed from the conjectured. HSBC, according to Reuters, expects Shell to unveil a $3.5 billion buyback for the fourth quarter. That figure remains a forecast, not a company announcement. Investors will therefore be watching not just earnings when Shell reports, but what capital returns management actually signs off on.

Refining Tailwind, Chemicals Headache

The earnings backdrop has shifted markedly. In its third-quarter 2026 trading update roughly two weeks ago, Shell put its indicative refining margin at $42 per barrel — up sharply from $24 in the second quarter. Reuters described the anticipated margin level as a record. A higher indicative margin, however, is not the same as reported group profit; the upcoming results must show how the improvement flows through to the bottom line.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?

Not every division moved in the same direction. The trading update showed the indicative chemicals margin slipping to $208 per tonne from $270. Refining strength thus stands opposite a softer chemicals picture.

Shell also raised its production guidance for the Integrated Gas segment in the third quarter of 2026 to between 740,000 and 780,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. That upgraded outlook is an expectation, not a reported quarterly figure, and belongs alongside the refining margin as operational context rather than as a verdict on the pending divestments.

Divestments Signed, Not Sealed

Media reports indicate Shell agreed on Friday to sell its French mobility business to DCC Energy. The transaction, which has yet to close, covers roughly 70 sites and eight LNG facilities, with 35 employees also affected. The provisional status is the key point: the agreement describes a planned change of ownership, not a completed exit from the business.

Earlier, on October 13, Shell agreed to sell its entire stake in the Shell Nigeria Gas Group to Vaaris Energy. Financial terms were not disclosed, and completion is subject to regulatory approvals.

Against that backdrop, the buybacks and the divestment agreements represent different stages of corporate action — one executed, the other still conditional.

Shell at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

October 29 as the Next Marker

Shell has scheduled third-quarter 2026 results and its dividend announcement for October 29. That date bundles the next hard information on both earnings and shareholder distributions.

Until then, the operative distinction is straightforward: higher profits and a further buyback are anticipated, but unconfirmed. Investors should not mistake the buyback expectation for capital return already decided.
