Siemens Slips on Factory Weakness as Buyback and Charging Rollout Offset Gloom

Siemens shares fell 1.7% to EUR 272.90 on soft German manufacturing data, as buybacks trimmed the float and analysts stayed split.

Siemens shares came under pressure midweek after downbeat manufacturing data from Germany's industrial heartland revived worries about the order pipeline at Europe's largest engineering group. The Munich-based technology conglomerate, whose fortunes are closely tied to the capital-spending cycles of factories and utilities, traded at EUR 272.90 by Wednesday, a decline of 1.7 percent on the day.

The pullback leaves the stock 6.4 percent shy of its 52-week high, though it still commands a cushion of 6.3 percent above its 200-day moving average — a technical signal that longer-term momentum has yet to crack. Investors are weighing how deeply a cooling in order intake will ripple through the core business over the coming quarters.

Buyback Keeps Shrinking the Float

Against that cautious macro backdrop, management is leaning on its own balance sheet to support the share price. Siemens disclosed that it repurchased another 206,489 shares between September 28 and October 4 inclusive, bringing the total bought back since the program launched on July 1 to 4,137,546 shares.

The steady stream of buybacks trims the number of freely traded shares in circulation, and market watchers read the transactions as a sign that the board considers the current valuation well supported.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens?

Analysts Divided on the Road Ahead

Opinion on the stock remains split on the sell side. DZ Bank restated its buy rating on October 2 with a fair value of EUR 330, while Deutsche Bank Research kept a more guarded "Hold" stance on October 1 and a price target of EUR 270. The gap between the two targets captures the ongoing debate over how quickly industrial demand will recover: optimists point to structural trends in automation and sturdy demand from data-center customers, while the more cautious camp urges patience given uncertainty in parts of discrete manufacturing.

Charging Network and Rail Orders Gain Traction

Operationally, Siemens has notched several concrete wins. Its first commercial SICHARGE FLEX fast-charging system went live in Kufstein on September 30, delivered in partnership with OMV. The pilot installation covers six charging points for trucks and passenger cars, and the energy group has already ordered the technology for additional sites.

Rail is providing another pillar. On September 24, Siemens agreed with Belgian network operator Infrabel to extend their partnership through an 11-year framework contract aimed at modernizing and safeguarding the country's national rail traffic management system. A day later, Siemens Mobility unveiled its new Inspiro train for London's Piccadilly line at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin.

Leadership Reshuffle and Distribution Alliance

On the organizational front, the company is reworking its domestic setup. Managers of the individual German businesses now operate within a joint leadership team, with Sabrina Herrmann taking the spokesperson role. As of the same date, Thomas Schott assumed leadership of the Chemnitz branch and its representation, succeeding Michael Schmidt, who will focus on sales and service in automation and drive technology.

Those moves are flanked by partnership efforts. Siemens struck a global distribution framework with TD SYNNEX to widen market access for technologies built around physical artificial intelligence, linking information technology with operational workflows. The broad order book across infrastructure and rail continues to underpin the group even as the macro picture clouds over.
