Silver's 6.3% Drop Forces Investors to Confront a Weakening Demand Story
Published on 10/31/2026 at 11:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deSilver's sharpest daily decline in recent memory has left the metal at 49.14 USD per troy ounce, a 6.3% drop that says as much about shifting rate expectations as it does about the metal's own fundamentals. Technical indicators offered no sign of the selling pressure easing as of today, according to media reports, leaving investors to weigh near-term downside against longer-dated forecasts that still point higher.
The scale of the move has multiple explanations. Inflation and interest-rate anxiety rank high among them, but selling across the technology complex also weighed on precious metals, and some investors may have liquidated silver holdings to raise liquidity. Such flows need not reflect the metal's longer-term prospects, though they can amplify short-term pressure.
A Deficit That Cuts Both Ways
The World Silver Survey, published by the Silver Institute, projects a supply shortfall of 46.3 million ounces for 2026 — the sixth consecutive annual deficit. That headline figure has long served as the bullish case for silver. It tells only part of the story.
Demand is the other half. The institute forecasts a roughly 2% decline in global silver demand, with industrial fabrication set to fall 3%. The principal culprit is weaker demand from the photovoltaic sector, where solar manufacturers are cutting their silver consumption — solar demand alone is expected to shrink by about 19%. Market observers also anticipate a narrowing of the gap between supply and demand. For investors, the existence of a deficit matters less than its trajectory.

Two Members Dissent as Rate Fears Build
The macro backdrop turned less friendly after Wednesday's Federal Reserve meeting, when two members of the policy committee voted for an immediate 25-basis-point rate hike. Rising oil prices sharpened inflation concerns, reinforcing expectations that US rates will stay higher for longer. Higher yield expectations weigh on demand for non-yielding precious metals — an awkward combination when the supply-side support is simultaneously eroding.
Europe added its own pressure. Data from the eurozone, reported yesterday by dpa-AFX, fueled speculation about a European Central Bank rate increase in December. On the US side, the September PCE inflation reading of 3.6% kept fears of further tightening alive. The market-implied probability of a US rate hike in December was put at 70–80% in an assessment published today — hardly a done deal, but enough to keep the mood fragile.
Analysts Split on the Near Term
Sucden Financial's Daria Efanova and Viktoria Kuszak flagged the same double burden yesterday, citing weaker industrial demand — particularly from solar — alongside restrictive US monetary policy as near-term headwinds. They identified a support zone between 50 and 53 USD per ounce, though such a zone is no guaranteed floor. Their view pairs short-term risk with an expected recovery, forecasting a climb to 57–60 USD per ounce by mid-January 2027.
Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Mirae Asset Sharekhan, by contrast, warned yesterday of a further slide to 48 USD per ounce. The research house draws an explicit distinction between horizons: silver may keep falling in the short run, while lower levels look attractive over the medium and long term. That is not a call that a bottom has formed — it describes the tension between persistent selling and a potentially cheaper long-term entry point.
What a Recovery Would Require
A lower price on its own proves nothing. For a durable rebound, the selling pressure would first need to fade and rate fears to recede; higher real yields and inflation worries have been among the heaviest weights on the metal of late. Until then, the expected supply deficit is not enough on its own to argue for a sustained turn in prices — especially with the industrial demand that underpins the bullish case showing cracks of its own.
