Silver's Crossroads: Solar's Exodus Reshapes the Demand Equation While Fed Bets Rule the Tape
Published on 09/09/2026 at 22:33 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe white metal is navigating an unusual convergence of forces — one that pits a slow-burning structural shift in its industrial base against the violent, short-term swings of monetary policy. At 66.38 US-Dollar per ounce on Tuesday, silver slipped 0.7 percent on the day, yet the modest pullback masks a market wrestling with two very different narratives.
The Solar Dimming
The most consequential development for silver's long-term outlook is happening not in trading floors but on factory lines in China. LONGi, the country's photovoltaic heavyweight, is preparing to shift its solar cell production to copper-based contacts, with mass manufacturing slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026. Rival Aiko Solar says it has already reached gigawatt-scale output of silver-free modules. Together, the two manufacturers represent a significant chunk of global solar capacity, and their technological pivot is being read across the industry as a harbinger.
The numbers underscore why this matters. The Silver Institute projects solar demand for silver will contract by roughly 19 percent in 2026, following an already weaker year. Photovoltaics had been a cornerstone of the industrial demand that kept the market in persistent deficit — and helped underpin the metal's price for years. Remove that pillar, and the supply-demand arithmetic shifts in ways the market is only beginning to price.
That said, the Institute still expects overall industrial silver demand to expand through 2030. The anticipated drivers: electric vehicles and their charging networks, data centers, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Whether these sectors can absorb the slack left by solar will go a long way toward determining how the market's long-running supply deficit evolves.
Investment demand remains another pillar of support. Global sales of coins and bars rose 14 percent in 2025, and industry watchers project another 18 percent increase in 2026, fueled largely by an anticipated recovery in US retail buying.

A Market on a Knife's Edge
Set against that structural backdrop is a market that has spent the past fortnight whipsawed by macro signals. Silver's recent recovery follows a sharp selloff that began in early September, when hawkish Federal Reserve expectations and a firmer dollar drove the metal down more than 2.5 percent on September 1 to roughly 64.85 US-Dollar. Spot silver at one point slipped over 3 percent intraday, touching its lowest level since August 19.
The reversal came quickly. Softer US labor data and falling yields halted the slide, with prices stabilizing near 64 US-Dollar before climbing back above 67 US-Dollar. The rebound illustrates just how sensitive silver has become to every nuance in the rates and currency complex.
Traders had been bracing for the US jobs report due September 5, with speculation over another Fed adjustment keeping sentiment fragile. Each data point was being translated almost mechanically into buying or selling pressure — a dynamic that explains the outsized moves between the September 2 low of roughly 64.24 US-Dollar and the subsequent rally.
Reading the Longer Tape
Zoom out, and the picture is more dramatic still. Silver hit an all-time high above 121 US-Dollar in January before a sharp correction followed. Over twelve months, the metal still shows a 61 percent gain — a testament to the extraordinary volatility of the past year. Year-to-date, however, silver sits 6.0 percent lower, reflecting the scale of that January pullback.
On a weekly basis, the current 66.38 US-Dollar level represents a 0.7 percent gain, suggesting the market has found some footing after the recent turbulence — even if the near-term direction remains uncertain.
For investors, the calculus is shifting. The question is no longer just about the Fed's next move, though that remains the dominant near-term compass. It's increasingly about whether the industrial demand base for silver can hold up as its most reliable growth engine — solar — phases out the metal. The industry's technological departure from silver is set to keep that debate alive for quarters to come, even as daily trading remains hostage to the latest twist in US monetary policy.
