Silver's ETF Stockpile Hits a March High While Mine Supply Stumbles and Chinese Buyers Sit on Their Hands
Published on 11/06/2026 at 13:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deSilver is leaning on a friendlier financial backdrop, but the metal's recovery is being tested from two directions at once — a supply side that keeps springing leaks and a physical demand base that has yet to show up.
The spot price stood at 51.87 USD per troy ounce, with the prior session's close of 51.80 USD underlining how little ground the metal has managed to hold onto despite the tailwind from lower US Treasury yields. That support, which had eased expectations of further tightening from the Federal Reserve, ran into a wall of cross-asset selling late in the US session as a technology-stock rout spilled over into industrials and growth names.
A Financial Tailwind, Interrupted
The shift in the macro picture has been anything but one-directional. Hopes of a de-escalation in the US-Iran standoff initially calmed inflation nerves, only for reports of attacks on merchant vessels near the Strait of Hormuz to push oil prices higher and revive uncertainty about the inflation outlook. Falling crude had earlier helped dampen both inflation and rate concerns, according to media reports — a dynamic that has since reversed.
What has held up is investor appetite through exchange-traded vehicles. Global silver ETF holdings reached 815.86 million troy ounces on Wednesday, the highest level since March 11, according to media reports. That figure points to financial buyers doing the heavy lifting while the physical market lags.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?
China's Buyers Are Waiting, Not Buying
The hesitation is most visible in Asia. Market reports from China on the previous day described downstream buyers adopting a wait-and-see stance after the price advance, with spot business moving slowly. Dealers, for their part, pointed to limited inventories — a combination of higher prices and reluctant purchasing against a backdrop of scarce immediately available metal.
Chinese silver stockpiles fell to 3,800 tonnes in the reporting week, a drop of 67 tonnes from the prior week. The tension is easy to read: shrinking inventories can underpin prices, but only if buyers return to the market at these levels.
Mine Supply Keeps Springing Leaks
On the production side, Pan American Silver flagged constraints on Wednesday, saying it expects 2026 silver output at the low end of its 25–27 million ounce guidance range. The company cited unplanned downtime at Huaron due to repairs to the foundation of the main grinding mill, along with a higher gold-to-silver production ratio at Cerro Moro.
China's output picture is similarly patchy. Holiday-related interruptions to recycling and maintenance work at copper smelters have weighed on production there. For October, Chinese silver bars in the SMM 1# category were reported down 5.03% from September, though cumulative 2026 output remained 3.72% above the same period a year earlier. The net effect is a mixed supply signal: short-term outages set against a year-to-date increase in Chinese production.
The Next Real Test
Additional clarity could arrive with a mid-November interim update expected from Metals Focus and the Silver Institute, which may revisit their assessment of the market balance. How the two houses weigh the opposing signals from investment demand and physical trading will matter for investors.
Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Their standing forecast still projects a 2026 silver market deficit of 46.3 million troy ounces — a fundamental counterweight to the sluggish Chinese spot demand of recent days.
For now, the recovery rests on the dollar, yields and ETF holdings. It would take on a more durable footing if physical buyers follow through and the anticipated forecast update confirms the picture of a tight market balance. Until then, Chinese caution remains the chief constraint on an otherwise more supportive environment.
