Silver found its footing in European trading on Thursday after a stretch of heavy selling, helped along by a softer tone from the Federal Reserve that pulled Treasury yields and the dollar off their recent highs.

The metal had closed Wednesday at $55.80 an ounce on the COMEX, a session that saw it shed 6.0% as the interest-rate debate in Washington weighed on non-yielding assets. Rising yields on fixed-income paper had been eroding the appeal of precious metals, and the release of hotter-than-expected US consumer inflation roughly two weeks earlier had already set off a wave of selling.

Yields Retreat, Dollar Slips From 18-Month Peak

Comments from within the Fed's ranks took some of the edge off. Mary Daly acknowledged that further policy moves may be needed down the road, but made clear there is no pressing case for action at the upcoming meeting on October 27 and 28. Michelle Bowman struck a similar note, saying the central bank has time to let the economic data come to it.

The response was swift: the yield on ten-year US Treasuries dropped to a three-week low, and the dollar index backed away from an 18-month high touched earlier. Cheaper borrowing costs and a weaker greenback lower the opportunity cost of holding bullion and coins, giving silver room to stabilize after its recent losses.

A Split Tape for the Year

Year to date, silver is down 21%, sitting far below its 52-week peak of $121.78 set at the end of January 2026. That gap has left market watchers deeply divided on where the metal heads next.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

Mike McGlone of Bloomberg Intelligence sees more downside risk and flags a possible near-term slide to $50, a level he identifies as key technical support. Only a climb above $84, in his view, would brighten the broader chart picture. UBS takes the other side of the trade, projecting a target of $70 by December 2026.

Fresh Data on the Docket

Thursday's calendar puts the spotlight back on US economic releases. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is due to publish the September producer price index at 08:30 ET, alongside retail sales figures and the weekly count of initial jobless claims — all inputs that could shape expectations for the Fed's rate path.

Miners Paint a Mixed Operational Picture

Away from the macro fray, producers offered a look at their third-quarter 2026 performance. Aya Gold & Silver posted record output of 1.50 million ounces of silver from its Zgounder mine, with consolidated production across all segments reaching 2.03 million ounces of silver equivalent — a 51% jump from the same period a year earlier.

Endeavour Silver cut a more cautious figure. The company reported production of 2,096,545 ounces of silver and sales of 1,900,368 ounces, holding 363,854 ounces of silver bullion in inventory as of September 30. It also said it will revise its full-year guidance, with output now expected at the low end of its range or slightly beneath it.

Industrial Demand Holds the Long View

Underneath the price swings, the market's fundamentals remain two-sided. Kenny Zhu of Sprott notes that roughly 50% to 60% of global silver demand comes from industrial applications such as photovoltaics and electronics, with the remaining 40% to 50% accounted for by bars, coins and investment products.

Because a substantial share of global supply emerges as a by-product of mining other metals, mine output cannot be adjusted quickly when prices move. That rigidity keeps attention fixed on whether industrial consumption can hold the market above its recent interim lows in the weeks ahead — even as media reports suggest global consumption in solar applications could fall by more than 20% in 2026, easing physical availability and potentially pushing the market into a surplus over the medium term.
