SK Hynix shares fell 7.1% in the previous session as a fresh wave of doubt over the payback on artificial-intelligence spending swept through Korean chipmakers. The trigger came from abroad: disappointing Alphabet results, Amazon's heavy AI-related outlays and a weaker profit outlook from Intel all weighed on sentiment. The move reads as a reaction to the wider market backdrop rather than any new warning from SK Hynix itself.

That distinction matters. Skepticism about what customers spend is not the same thing as a deterioration in SK Hynix's own order book.

The numbers behind the noise

On Wednesday the company reported record figures for the third quarter of 2026: revenue of 104.6155 trillion won, operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won and net income of 39.7756 trillion won. Those results are a forceful counterweight to the prevailing unease, and they make it hard to read the sell-off as confirmation of a bearish case against the business.

Management has also said that long-term agreements cover more than 50% of production capacity for 2027–2028. By its own account, practically all DRAM and HBM capacity is sold out through 2029. A substantial share of future output is therefore already spoken for and does not hinge on short-term demand forecasts.

Yet coverage is not the same as profit. What counts for valuation is whether those contracts translate into a sustained high earnings level. Investors should treat the order book as a support, not a guarantee of future margins.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

IBK trims its target but keeps the faith

IBK Investment & Securities offered its own version of that split on Thursday, cutting its price target to 3.2 million won from 4 million won while leaving its buy rating in place. Analyst Kim Un-ho attributed the revision to the gap between the share price and intrinsic value, not to weakening conditions in the memory market.

The company, meanwhile, expects memory supply shortages to persist until 2030. If that forecast holds, long-term agreements and tight capacity could together underpin planning — provided demand survives the mounting doubts about AI profitability.

Capital returns with a caveat

The board approved a 20 trillion won share buyback on Wednesday, split roughly evenly between shareholder returns and employee compensation. That split means the entire program should not be lumped together as a return of capital to investors. SK Hynix has also flagged planned capital returns of about 100 trillion won for 2026, comprising more than 30 trillion won in cash dividends and more than 60 trillion won for buybacks and share cancellations. A quarterly dividend of 20,000 won per share was approved alongside the new repurchase.

These are weighty arguments for the shareholder case, but they are announced plans rather than completed measures — and they offer no shield against a more cautious market.

What to watch next

The next concrete operational test is the expected rise of HBM4 to become the main product. SK Hynix has flagged the shift; it should not be treated as already accomplished. Whether that development confirms expectations for demand and earnings quality will shape the next stage of the story.

The bear case does not require a collapse in the memory business. A persistently more skeptical view of AI investment could simply lead investors to pay less for expected profits — and yesterday's selling pressure shows how forcefully the sector backdrop can move the stock.

So the real question is not whether the pullback alone represents an opportunity. It is whether contractual commitments and product execution can generate enough confidence to offset the heightened skepticism toward the AI investment cycle. The operating counterweight looks strong; reading the decline as a refutation of the business would go too far, just as treating record results as a free pass on valuation risk would be premature.
