SK Hynix shares advanced on Thursday, riding a rebound in South Korean equities that has more to do with the wider market than with any single corporate headline. The stock added 4.9%, according to one reading of the session, with domestic institutional buying underpinning Seoul's benchmark even as US semiconductor names endured a sharp selloff.

The move came against a mixed backdrop. Pension funds and other institutional investors stepped in to support Korean stocks, while resilient chip exports offered a counterweight to fears of softening demand. Some of the buying was attributed by market watchers to SK Hynix's own ongoing share repurchase programme — though those transactions remain unconfirmed.

Record Quarter Sets the Fundamental Floor

The business case rests on Wednesday's third-quarter 2026 results, which delivered a record top line. Revenue reached 104.6155 trillion won, with operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won and net profit of 39.7756 trillion won.

Management pointed to robust demand for AI memory. In its own assessment, memory demand will outstrip supply through 2030 — a company forecast rather than an established outcome, but one that helps explain why weakness elsewhere in the chip sector need not read across to SK Hynix's own prospects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The product roadmap adds detail to that outlook. SK Hynix expects HBM4 to overtake HBM3E in both shipments and revenue during the fourth quarter of 2026, tying its guidance to a concrete shift within its portfolio. Whether that expectation materialises is a separate question from the record results already booked.

Buyback Has Two Halves

Support also comes from the capital-return programme. A further tranche began on Thursday, with SK Hynix set to repurchase roughly 20 trillion won of stock through 28 January 2027. About 10 trillion won is earmarked for shareholder value, including share cancellations; the remainder covers employee compensation.

That split matters. Not all of the announced volume is destined for cancellation, and the buybacks suspected behind Thursday's individual trades have not been confirmed.

Two Broker Views, One Direction

Analyst action has been mixed on price targets but consistent on direction. IBK Investment & Securities reaffirmed its buy rating on Thursday while cutting its target to 3.2 million won from 4 million won, citing the gap between the share price and intrinsic value rather than concerns about the memory market's fundamentals. Cantor Fitzgerald, for its part, lowered its target to $250 from $300 on 26 October while keeping an Overweight rating.

The pattern is a more cautious valuation call paired with continued positive commentary on the operating environment — a distinction that fits Thursday's rally, which drew on broad market support while record earnings and the running buyback supplied company-specific arguments.

Solidigm Listing Off the Table

Separately, SK Hynix confirmed it ended its review of pre-IPO and listing options for subsidiary Solidigm on 23 October. The company cited capital-market conditions and the interests of SK Hynix and existing shareholders. Thursday's market rebound does nothing to alter that closed process.

Intel's weak guidance, meanwhile, is not being read uniformly as a warning for memory. Analysts cited in media reports see cost pressure from high memory prices rather than collapsing memory demand — a distinction that matters for SK Hynix, since strain on the customer side does not automatically mean a deteriorating market for the supplier.
