SK Hynix Courts AMD on HBM4 While Navigating Lockup Expiry, Patent Suit and Solidigm IPO Chatter

SK Hynix spent the week juggling high-stakes courtship on the AI chip front with a fresh batch of legal, regulatory and market headaches. Management sat down with AMD chief executive Lisa Su in South Korea on Wednesday to discuss cooperation in artificial intelligence semiconductors, with the conversation centering on future shipments of HBM4 memory modules. Media reports described the meeting as exploratory talks rather than the sealing of a binding supply contract.
That outreach unfolded alongside a more unusual test of the company's engineering credentials. DRAM and UFS products from the South Korean memory maker are riding aboard a domestic satellite launched on the fifth flight of the Nuri rocket, where they will be put through their paces in Earth orbit. The experiment is designed to show how the components hold up under the extreme conditions of space.
Legal Maneuvers and Workplace Scrutiny at Home
On the legal front, SK Hynix went on the offensive. On Thursday the chipmaker and its subsidiary SK Hynix America filed a declaratory judgment action in the United States against Longhorn IP LLC and Mago Barca IP LLC in a patent dispute, seeking court clarity on intellectual property rights in the US market.
Closer to home, regulatory matters surfaced on Wednesday. South Korea's state agency for workers' compensation and welfare received three claims for occupational illnesses tied to work at the company's Icheon plant. SK Hynix said it is cooperating with the authorities' investigations.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
A Bruising Friday for Memory Names
The stock itself came under pressure to close the week, shedding 2.4% on Friday to finish at 1,681,000.00 KRW. Weakness across the broader semiconductor segment set the tone for Asian trading, after disappointing preliminary quarterly figures from rival Samsung Electronics combined with macroeconomic headwinds weighed on the entire memory space.
Thursday brought particularly stiff crosscurrents. Beyond Samsung's miss, climbing US Treasury yields and rising oil prices pressed valuations on technology and chip stocks. Mounting worries about future memory supply and pricing added to the gloom, and peers including Micron and SanDisk were caught up in the broad selloff.
Attention now turns to SK Hynix's own results. According to media reports, the company will publish its third-quarter 2026 report on October 27. Market watchers flagged dampening factors ahead of the release, including a stronger won and expected special charges for employee bonuses. Additional selling pressure emerged after a 90-day lockup on certain company shares expired, releasing more stock for trading.
Toshiba Capacity Talk and a Contrarian Analyst Call
Supply-side jitters had already rippled through the sector earlier in the week. Toshiba's plan to roughly double hard drive production capacity by fiscal 2027 relative to fiscal 2025 levels stoked concerns about future data-center supply. Cantor Fitzgerald analysts, however, called the resulting share price declines across memory names overdone, noting that the capacity expansion is likely to have only a limited near-term impact on the industry.
Solidigm IPO Speculation Meets a Firm Denial
Away from the operating business, reports about US subsidiary Solidigm drew attention. According to media accounts, Solidigm has selected investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as lead underwriters for a possible initial public offering in 2027. SK Hynix made clear that no decision on an IPO has been taken. Estimates put potential proceeds at around $10 billion.
Despite the recent consolidation, the stock retains considerable strength on a longer view, up 159% since the start of the year. For market participants, the focus now rests on how firmly SK Hynix's profitability can hold up against the broader headwinds buffeting the memory sector.
