SK Hynix Drops 7.5% as AI Spending Doubts Migrate From Buyers to Suppliers
Published on 10/30/2026 at 15:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares fell 7.5% on Thursday, caught in a broad selloff of US technology stocks that has revived questions about whether the massive sums being poured into artificial intelligence will ever earn an adequate return. The decline reflects the market environment rather than any fresh negative disclosure from the South Korean chipmaker itself — a distinction that matters for anyone trying to read the move.
The trigger came from several directions. Alphabet's quarterly revenue fell short of expectations while its AI-related spending climbed, and the resulting slide in its shares weighed on Asian tech names, according to Reuters. Weak results from other American technology companies added to the pressure, and media reports pointed to profit-taking in SK Hynix after the stock's gains the previous day.
Two Different Yardsticks
What is being questioned is the profitability of AI investments on the customer side, not a deterioration in SK Hynix's own business. The company's third-quarter 2026 results, published Wednesday, showed revenue of KRW 104.6155 trillion, operating profit of KRW 83.3338 trillion and net profit of KRW 39.7756 trillion. Those figures describe SK Hynix's business; the market's anxiety concerns the returns large technology groups can generate from their AI outlays. The two levels are connected, but they are not the same thing.
That gap is the crux for investors. A supplier can post hefty profits while shareholders grow more skeptical about its customers' willingness to keep spending. Worry about AI project returns does not amount to documented evidence of a collapse in memory demand — but it does explain why strong corporate results offer no reliable protection against a sector-wide retreat.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Analyst Targets Trimmed, Ratings Held
The analyst response requires the same careful reading. IBK Investment & Securities reaffirmed its buy rating on SK Hynix on Wednesday while cutting its price target to KRW 3.2 million from KRW 4 million. Analyst Kim Un-ho attributed the adjustment to the gap between the share price and his estimated intrinsic value, and explicitly did not cite a weaker memory market outlook as the reason. The lower target, in other words, should not be read as a warning of a demand slump.
KB Securities also reduced its target on Wednesday, to KRW 3.5 million from KRW 4.2 million. Both moves temper the optimism embedded in valuation marks, but neither supports conclusions beyond the adjustments themselves — and neither should be conflated with Thursday's selling pressure, which was driven by US tech trading.
Long-Term Contracts as a Counterweight
Against the nervous market mood stand the company's long-term supply agreements. SK Hynix said Wednesday that contracts with major customers cover more than 50% of its total production capacity for 2027 and 2028, and that it is in talks about possible extensions to the typically five-year arrangements. No extensions have been agreed yet.
Such contracts carry more weight than mere hope for a continued AI boom, though their significance should not be overstated: capacity coverage is not a guarantee of all future profits, nor does it settle the profitability question on the buyers' side. Management's own assessment sees the tight balance between memory supply and demand persisting until 2030, with HBM4 slated to become the main product in the fourth quarter of 2026 — expectations rather than established outcomes.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Fittingly, the company held its first partner day in Japan on Wednesday, bringing together executives from local partners to align business and technology plans and coordinate supply-chain planning. While the stock market debates investment returns, SK Hynix is tending to the operational wiring of its supply chain.
For investors, two signals now sit side by side: customer contracts that underpin the predictability of the business, and a market environment plus lower analyst targets that weigh on the valuation. Thursday's slide shows above all how sharply the stock reacts to doubts about the economic returns of the AI boom — doubts about the investment trend, not proof of its failure.
