SK Hynix Pushes Solidigm Toward a US Listing as Broker Targets Climb

SK Hynix says no IPO is approved for its Solidigm NAND unit, though bankers are hired for a possible US listing that could raise about $10 billion.

SK Hynix is laying the groundwork for a potential spin-off of its flash memory unit, even as the South Korean chipmaker insists no final call has been made. Bloomberg reports that Solidigm — the NAND and SSD business SK Hynix absorbed from Intel — has tapped Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to lead a possible US initial public offering, a debut that could land as soon as next year and raise roughly $10 billion.

Valuations attached to the unit are eye-catching. Estimates put Solidigm's total worth at between $100 billion and $150 billion, depending on which report you read, with the lower end of that range cited in the mandate coverage. SK Hynix responded cautiously to the speculation, stating plainly that no IPO has been approved and that it is still weighing both internal and external financing options. The company added that any impact on existing shareholders would be examined closely before it commits to a path.

That caution is understandable given the regulatory backdrop in Seoul. South Korea's Financial Services Commission introduced tougher rules in August governing dual listings of parent and subsidiary companies. While those requirements do not automatically apply to overseas venues, SK Hynix could still face retrospective penalties if minority investors are left inadequately protected. Politicians have already begun pressing for clarity — lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo among them — and attention at home is building around the risk that floating a profitable division could unsettle the parent's own shareholder base.

What Solidigm Brings to the Table

Solidigm's appeal rests on enterprise-grade SSDs, a segment turbocharged by demand from AI data centers. In the first half of 2026, the unit accounted for about 9.3% of SK Hynix's total revenue. To hedge against geopolitical exposure, the company plans to build its first NAND fabrication plant on US soil. Production currently runs out of Dalian, China, where a second facility is slated to double output by 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The memory story extends well beyond NAND. Counterpoint Research notes that Nvidia's upcoming accelerator chips will rely on twelve-layer memory stacks, and SK Hynix has already kicked off mass production of HBM4. Because building high-bandwidth memory consumes more than three times the capacity of conventional DRAM, supply remains tight across multiple product categories.

Analysts Stay Bullish Despite a Soft Session

Shares in Seoul slipped 1.5% on the day to KRW 1,697,000.00, a modest pullback that does little to dent a year-to-date advance of 161%. Brokerage houses remain constructive: Barclays carries a $300 price target on the stock, while Wolfe Research recently lifted its own from $200 to $250. Both firms point to SK Hynix's commanding position in memory technology for compute-heavy AI workloads as the central driver of future growth.

Management is also shoring up ties with key chip customers. CEO Kwak Noh-jung met AMD chief Lisa Su to discuss deepening collaboration, and Su described the Korean group as a key partner in AMD's memory supply chain — a relationship spanning multiple chip generations, according to Reuters.

Environmental Scrutiny at Home

Not all the news is about expansion. The provincial government of Gyeonggi has asked Seoul to set legal limits on certain wastewater discharges after tests in a stream receiving effluent from SK Hynix's Icheon plant showed chloride and sulfate levels above FAO recommendations. The province noted that all parameters with existing national standards stayed within legal thresholds.

Investors now turn to the next earnings print. Media reports point to third-quarter 2026 results arriving on October 27, a date currently considered provisional. The report should reveal how demand from major customers is translating into profit.
