SK Hynix's HBM4 Handover Is the Real Story Beneath Friday's 7.1% Slide
Published on 11/01/2026 at 07:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe memory maker's fourth-quarter product transition, a supply-scarcity call stretching to 2030, and a 100 trillion won capital-return plan all matter more than a single brutal session — but none of them settles the question investors are actually asking.
SK Hynix lost 7.1% on Friday, caught in a sector-wide rout of AI and semiconductor names. Reuters tied the pressure to fresh doubts about the payback on heavy AI spending, with Alphabet's weaker-than-expected quarterly revenue and an accelerated AI-driven cash outflow setting the tone, compounded by losses in other US tech stocks. That justifies a harder look at the economics of the AI boom. It does not justify treating every company in the blast radius as though its business had already cracked.
The distinction is the whole ballgame. A nervous sector reaction doesn't make reported results any less solid, and a strong closed quarter can't dispel worries about later disappointments. Blur the two and you explain the share-price swing quickly while misjudging the company.
A Product Handover, Not a Profit Warning
On Wednesday, SK Hynix said HBM4 should become its main product in the fourth quarter. That announcement deserves more attention than the latest round of hand-wringing over AI budgets. The company also said the tight balance between memory supply and demand could persist until 2030 — not a short-term recovery call, but the prospect of a longer stretch of scarcity.
Management went further, describing DRAM and HBM volumes as effectively sold out through 2029. The foundation there is a mix of secured long-term agreements and customer demand still under negotiation. Secured contracts and ongoing talks are not the same thing. The claim points to a powerful demand outlook, but it should not be read as fully contracted sales — a distinction that carries more weight in a skeptical market than the headline word "sold out."
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Records on the Books, Expectations in the Balance
For the third quarter of 2026, SK Hynix reported record revenue of 104.6155 trillion won and operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won. Net profit came in at 39.7756 trillion won. Those are the operating facts behind management's longer-range confidence.
They document what has already been achieved. The scarcity forecast describes what is expected. Anyone who equates the two turns a strong quarter into a guarantee for years to come — the wrong shortcut in a market whose mood hinges on the appraisal of future AI returns.
The debate therefore isn't only about more investment and distant payoffs. SK Hynix expects shareholder returns of roughly 100 trillion won for fiscal 2026, including at least 30 trillion won in cash dividends and at least 60 trillion won in buybacks and share cancellations. The board approved a third-quarter cash dividend of 14 trillion won and a 20 trillion won buyback on Wednesday, with 10 trillion won of the shares earmarked for return to shareholders to be cancelled. Those resolutions put a company-specific counterweight to broad AI skepticism — they make the use of capital concrete. They still don't answer whether future investments will earn their keep, so generous payouts and disciplined spending decisions have to be judged separately.
Analysts Trim Targets, Keep the Faith
Broker actions fit that tension. IBK Investment & Securities stuck with its buy rating on Thursday but cut its price target from 4 million KRW to 3.2 million KRW, citing the gap between the share price and its estimated intrinsic value. A buy call and a lower target are not contradictory; they show a positive fundamental view coexisting with a more cautious valuation. Another analyst move on Monday paired a target reduction with a continued positive rating.
On the investment side, SK Hynix clarified on Thursday that subsidiary Solidigm is exploring ways to strengthen its competitiveness and expand production capacity. No decision has been made on the reported investment in a US NAND plant, according to the regulatory filing. Neither an approved expansion nor a retreat can be inferred from that — and the restraint matters, because a review must not enter valuations as a firm additional capital commitment.
What the Selloff Does and Doesn't Prove
Friday's decline is understandable as a warning signal about demanding expectations. As a verdict on SK Hynix's operating position, it falls short. Record results, long-term agreements and approved capital measures argue against a purely negative reading.
The line that matters runs between operating strength and the durability the market assigns to it. HBM4 is the concrete test case; the scarcity forecast is the wider frame. Both deserve more weight than an isolated daily move — and more scrutiny than a bare reference to a record quarter. What remains open is how dependable demand is beyond secured contracts, and which investments actually get the green light. That is where the valuation should start, not with sentiment toward AI alone.
