SK Hynix booked one of the most profitable quarters in its history on Wednesday. By the next session, the stock had fallen 7.5%, swept up in a selloff across Asian chip names. The gap between those two facts is the whole story.

The trigger came from outside the memory sector. Alphabet reported revenue that fell short of expectations alongside a rising AI-related cash outflow, reviving doubts about whether the industry's enormous infrastructure spending will ever earn an adequate return. Reuters reported that fears over the payback timeline on AI investment drove the selling, which spread from the hyperscalers to their suppliers. No fresh negative disclosure from SK Hynix itself was behind the move.

That distinction matters. Investors were not re-rating the company's current earnings; they were re-pricing the uncertainty surrounding the investment cycle that feeds it. Heavy capex no longer reads as a clean all-clear signal when questions about its economic yield are mounting at the same time. For SK Hynix, the focus shifts to how durable demand behind the AI buildout really is.

A quarter that speaks for itself

The numbers themselves leave little room for argument. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 came in at 104.6155 trillion Won, with operating profit of 83.3338 trillion Won — an operating margin of 80%. Net profit reached 39.7756 trillion Won.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Those figures stand as the company-specific counterweight to the broader skepticism. Yet the selloff demonstrates that the market is not looking only at profits already banked. Expectations for future AI investment weigh on the valuation just as heavily.

Management also said DRAM and HBM volumes are effectively sold out through 2029, and projected memory supply shortages persisting until 2030. Long-term agreements cover more than 50% of production capacity for 2027–2028, according to the company.

There is a caveat worth keeping in view. The sold-out claim blends volumes already secured under long-term contracts with customer demand still under negotiation. It should not be read as though every expected shipment has been firmly ordered — a distinction that gains weight as skepticism toward AI spending deepens. Contracted floors give the business a foundation; they do not settle the wider question of what returns the big technology buyers can earn on their infrastructure.

On the product side, SK Hynix expects HBM4 to become its dominant offering from the fourth quarter of 2026 — a forward-looking expectation rather than a completed transition.

Analysts trim targets, keep the faith

The research community is mirroring the same tension. Cantor Fitzgerald cut its price target to $250 from $300 on Monday while keeping its Overweight rating. IBK Investment & Securities reaffirmed its buy recommendation yesterday but lowered its target to 3.2 million Won from 4 million Won.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A positive rating and a lower valuation target are not contradictory. They separate the assessment of the business from the price investors should pay for it. Neither firm offered a detailed rationale for the cuts that can be reconstructed from the reports.

What investors are left weighing is straightforward: hard company numbers and contractually covered capacity on one side, a more cautious appraisal of the AI investment cycle on the other. Yesterday, the caution set the tone.
