SK Hynix Slips as CXMT's Server Memory Push Collides With AI Funding Jitters
Published on 10/19/2026 at 16:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares have come under pressure on two fronts at once: a broad retreat in semiconductor equities driven by doubts over how artificial intelligence buildouts are being financed, and fresh anxiety over Chinese competition in the memory segment that has long been the Korean chipmaker's stronghold.
The stock changed hands at 1,246,000.00 KRW in Seoul, down 2.0% on the session, after clawing back from much weaker levels earlier in the day. Pre-market indications had pointed to a steeper decline before foreign and institutional buyers stepped in during the trading session, according to media reports, putting a floor under the selloff.
Over the past seven days the shares have shed 20%, and they now sit 58% below their 52-week high. Even so, the year-to-date picture remains firmly positive, with a gain of 97% since the start of January.
AI Debt Concerns Ripple Across the Sector
The immediate trigger for the latest leg lower came from Wall Street, where mounting skepticism about the financing models underpinning artificial intelligence spending spilled over into chip names globally. Worries about debt-funded data center outlays and rising financing costs weighed on US companies including Micron, Broadcom and AMD, and the weakness carried through to Asia's semiconductor heavyweights.
Investors are increasingly focused on how quickly the enormous capital being poured into AI infrastructure will actually generate returns for operators, with potential interest burdens adding to their caution. Foreign investors offloaded SK Hynix stock worth a combined 5.3565 trillion won amid the correction.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
CXMT's Server Ambitions Add a Second Front
Compounding the sector-wide gloom, reports of technological advances at Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies have unsettled investors. CXMT plans to move server DDR5 RDIMM modules built on a next-generation 4F² DRAM architecture into mass production before the end of 2026, according to Reuters — a direct thrust into a segment previously served mainly by established industry players.
Market watchers read the plans as a signal that Chinese chipmakers are closing the technology gap in advanced memory faster than previously assumed, intensifying fears of a price war and displacement competition. The news weighed noticeably on sentiment toward SK Hynix's server memory business.
Buyback Support Fades as Earnings Approach
A further drag has come from the expiry of a key prop: SK Hynix's share buyback program, which also provides for the cancellation of the repurchased shares, is nearing completion, Yonhap reported. The loss of that support has coincided with selling by overseas investors.
Attention now turns to the company's third-quarter 2026 results, due at the end of October. Market participants expect the figures to shed light on how resilient operating margins in the memory business really are, and what impact intensifying competition will have on the group's medium-term outlook.
Goldman Takes a Contrarian View
Not everyone is bearish. On October 16, analysts at Goldman Sachs named SK Hynix among their preferred picks in the memory segment amid the sector-wide selloff, arguing that investors are overestimating the ability of Chinese rivals to close the existing technology gap quickly. The US investment bank tempered expectations for an immediate rebound, however, warning that short-term catalysts for a decisive turn are scarce.
SK Hynix, for its part, is pressing ahead with its core expertise. At the OCP Global Summit the company showcased memory-centric server systems and concepts for modern AI memory architectures, and presented research on optimizing 3D-FeNAND technologies for AI computing applications. Whether that technological positioning is enough to steady the share price will, for now, depend largely on the global investment appetite of the major technology companies.
