SK Hynix Slips as Oracle's Funding Plans Put the AI Spending Cycle Under Scrutiny
Published on 11/03/2026 at 08:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deShares in SK Hynix came under pressure on Thursday, caught in a broader reassessment of whether the enormous sums being poured into artificial intelligence infrastructure will ever earn an adequate return. The stock posted a daily move of -5.0%, with media reports linking the selling to a sector-wide shift in sentiment rather than to any fresh company-specific disclosure.
The trigger this time traces back to the United States. Oracle is reportedly planning share and bond sales to bankroll its AI build-out, and those reports have been named as one catalyst behind the renewed unease. Steep losses among American chip and technology names piled further weight on the sector, and Korean technology stocks absorbed the spillover.
A question aimed at customers, not at SK Hynix
What investors are interrogating is the economics sitting behind the AI infrastructure boom — whether the capital deployed will translate into sufficient productivity and profit. For SK Hynix that distinction matters. The pressure is being attributed to an industry-wide mood swing, not to a new negative announcement from the company itself.
The tension between strong operating figures and a falling share price has been visible for days. Reports as early as Sunday flagged pressure on the stock despite record quarterly earnings, a contrast that lays bare what the market is currently watching: not simply demand for memory products, but how durable the investment case of SK Hynix's customers really is.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
The company's own numbers remain formidable. For the third quarter of 2026, SK Hynix reported record revenue of 104.6155 trillion Won, an operating profit of 83.3338 trillion Won and a net profit of 39.7756 trillion Won.
Contract cover and a product handover
Those results form the company-specific counterweight to the sector's weakness. On 28 October, SK Hynix said long-term customer agreements already cover more than 50% of its production capacity for 2027–2028, and management expects memory supply tightness to persist until 2030. The company also anticipates that HBM4 will become its leading HBM product in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Such arrangements give the company planning certainty and offer investors a concrete anchor for future utilisation. What they do not do is settle the wider question of returns on the customer side. A well-booked supplier does not automatically dispel valuation doubts hanging over the entire investment cycle — and that gap in perspective is precisely what is driving the current market reaction.
100 trillion Won earmarked for shareholders
Alongside its operational news, SK Hynix presented an expected shareholder return plan for fiscal 2026 on 28 October, sized at roughly 100 trillion Won. The programme pairs cash dividends with the purchase and cancellation of treasury shares, putting capital returned to investors in the spotlight next to the operating business.
The breakdown: at least 30 trillion Won in cash dividends, plus at least 60 trillion Won for share purchases and cancellations. The board additionally approved the acquisition of treasury shares worth 20 trillion Won.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Not all of that approved buyback is destined for cancellation — a portion is set aside to compensate employees and executives. That nuance matters for anyone trying to gauge how much of the programme amounts to direct capital return.
IBK keeps its buy call, trims its target
Analysts are reading the situation with similar care. IBK Investment & Securities reaffirmed its buy recommendation on Thursday while cutting its price target from 4 million Won to 3.2 million Won. The brokerage pointed to the gap between the share price and intrinsic value — not to any deterioration in memory market fundamentals.
That framing captures the central conflict neatly. Customer agreements and capital returns underpin the company-level outlook. Thursday's selling wave shows that doubts about the long-term payback on AI spending can still override those arguments in the market.
