SoftBank Keeps Its Dividend Word While the AI Bill Gets Harder to Read
Published on 10/23/2026 at 18:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deSoftBank Group has confirmed the interim payout it flagged back in May, declaring a dividend of 5.50 yen per share for the fiscal year running through 31 March 2027. Payment lands on 2 December, with 30 September as the record date, and the total outlay comes to 31,346 million yen. The figure matches the forecast issued on 13 May, so shareholders get continuity rather than a surprise.
That continuity deserves a closer look, because the raw year-on-year comparison can mislead. SoftBank executed a 4:1 stock split effective 1 January, so the prior interim dividend works out to the same 5.50 yen per share once adjusted. Anyone lining up unadjusted payout figures might read a cut into the numbers. There isn't one. In a jittery market, a change in share denomination should not be mistaken for deterioration.
What the resolution does not do is settle the larger question of how SoftBank funds and values its artificial-intelligence bets. A payout drawn from retained earnings says something about approved use of capital. It says nothing about whether every investment plan holds up if market conditions shift.
The OpenAI stake is where the real arithmetic sits
SoftBank has been leaning on debt to finance its AI exposure, including a commitment of just under $65 billion to OpenAI, according to media reports. That makes the valuation of the stake a far weightier issue for investors than an unchanged interim dividend.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank Group?
The Financial Times reported that OpenAI trimmed the valuation target for its new funding round from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion after pushback from investors. Even at the reduced level, the target still sits above the $852 billion attached to the March round. OpenAI aims to raise up to $30 billion, and the round had not closed, with the final valuation and allocation still pending. For SoftBank, the discussed terms are an important yardstick but not yet a completed transaction result.
A bond retired, a funding cost laid bare
Alongside the dividend, SoftBank disclosed that it had fully repaid and cancelled a euro-denominated bond ahead of schedule. The notes, issued in 2021 with a 2.875% coupon, had been due on 6 January 2027. Repayment and cancellation were completed yesterday, and no paper from that issue remains outstanding.
That closes one specific obligation. It does not answer whether the broader AI financing stack is sustainable. The high-yield bond sale from a little over three weeks ago illustrates the tension. According to Nikkei, coupons on the foreign-currency notes ranged from 7.125% to 9.750%, and proceeds went toward an additional $10 billion OpenAI investment. Demand for the bonds was strong, which cuts against the gloom in credit markets—SoftBank could raise capital, but only at steep coupons. A successful placement and cheap financing are not the same thing.
Bridge loans totalling $40 billion taken out earlier were also repaid in full ahead of schedule, Nikkei reported. Fitch rated SoftBank BB+ in September.
SoftBank Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Credit markets are watching closely
How intently the market now monitors these risks shows up in SoftBank's credit default swaps. Premiums on Tuesday reached their highest level in almost four years, according to media reports, while higher borrowing costs and doubts about AI investments weighed on the stock.
The next scheduled checkpoint for investors is the earnings release on 9 November 2026, when the picture on the sprawling AI investments and their funding will come into sharper focus. The retired euro bond is a clearly bounded step forward. It is not the broader relief the investment case needs: the cost of the capital SoftBank raises and the still-open OpenAI terms remain the valuation questions that matter. Keeping faith with the dividend is a point in the company's favour—but it is not an answer to the whole thesis.
