SoftBank's $10 Billion OpenAI Payment Comes Due as Valuation Talk Hits $1.4 Trillion
Published on 09/30/2026 at 13:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deSoftBank Group is about to cross the most consequential line item on its AI roadmap. The final $10 billion installment of its follow-on investment in OpenAI is scheduled for October 1, 2026, completing a $30 billion commitment that has reshaped the Japanese conglomerate's portfolio — and its risk profile.
The payment lands against a backdrop of extraordinary valuation momentum at the ChatGPT developer. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is now targeting a fresh funding round of at least $30 billion, at a pre-money valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion. That figure follows the company's decision to shelve its IPO plans, with CEO Sam Altman stating that the business will not go public in 2026, choosing instead to address AI safety questions without the scrutiny of public markets.
A Heavier Weight in the Portfolio
Once the October tranche settles, SoftBank is expected to hold approximately 13 percent of OpenAI. The concentration implications are hard to miss: S&P Global Ratings estimates that OpenAI could account for around 30 percent of SoftBank's entire portfolio after the additional investment. The agency lowered its outlook on the group to negative back in March.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank Group?
Funding for the OpenAI stake was raised through a bond issue, and the notes have performed well since settlement just over a week ago, gaining 5.0 percent. Reuters reported that the placement ranks as the largest corporate high-yield bond offering ever completed globally — a record that cuts both ways. It gives SoftBank the firepower to pursue its AI ambitions, but it also ties the company more tightly to credit market conditions and to the fortunes of a single, capital-hungry sector.
Debt remains a live topic for investors. SoftBank borrowed $40 billion in March 2026 to fund commitments including OpenAI. CEO Masayoshi Son has framed the opportunity in characteristically bold terms, describing AI's potential as 50 times larger than the dot-com bubble. Richard Kaye of asset manager Comgest offered a cooler read, noting that the portfolio's loan-to-value ratio sits below 25 percent and that the debt burden remains manageable for the group.
Arm's Slide Spills Over
Short-term trading has been choppier than the strategic picture. SoftBank shares came under pressure on Tuesday as Arm Holdings fell 8.7 percent in the prior U.S. session, part of a broader technology selloff triggered by rising long-term Treasury yields. Despite that overseas drag, SoftBank closed Tuesday at EUR 36.10, up 5.6 percent. By Wednesday the stock had slipped 0.3 percent to EUR 36.00, leaving the group's market capitalization at roughly EUR 195.96 billion.
The two sessions capture the tension running through the SoftBank story: a stock lifted by its AI positioning, yet vulnerable to the same rate and semiconductor currents moving global tech. What happens after October 1 will depend less on any single trading day than on whether OpenAI's trillion-dollar valuation story holds up — and whether SoftBank's balance sheet can keep carrying it.
