SoftBank's Buyback of Its Own Euro Debt Draws a Line Under a 2027 Maturity
Published on 10/28/2026 at 11:22 | Editorial boerse-global.deSoftBank Group closed out the week by extinguishing the last of its 2.875% senior euro notes, redeeming the entire outstanding principal of EUR 405,103,000 ahead of a maturity that had been scheduled for 6 January 2027. With the cancellation complete, no securities from that issue remain in circulation, the company said on Friday.
The retirement of the notes landed alongside a board decision to pay an interim dividend of JPY 5.50 per share, a distribution totalling JPY 31,346 million that is earmarked for payment on 2 December 2026. SoftBank also flagged 10 November 2026 as the date for its next earnings release, covering the second quarter of fiscal 2026 and the six months through 30 September 2026.
Two Catalysts Behind Thursday's Advance
The stock had climbed 4.3% in the prior session, lifted by a broader revival in artificial-intelligence names after Anthropic filed to list its shares — a development Reuters identified as a fresh spur for the AI trade, in which SoftBank is one of the largest investors. A second, separate impulse came from remarks by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim about potential investments by Masayoshi Son in the country.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank Group?
According to Anwar, Son has settled on locations for a proposed USD 50 billion deployment spanning artificial intelligence, technology and data centres. Dow Jones reported on Monday, citing the premier, that Kuching in Sarawak and peninsular Malaysia had been chosen. SoftBank, for its part, said only that it is examining opportunities in AI and digital infrastructure in Malaysia and did not confirm either the headline figure or the timetable — leaving the USD 50 billion as Anwar's characterization rather than a commitment signed off by the group.
Allied Universal Talks Still at an Early Stage
Speculation about a sizeable acquisition has been running in parallel. Reuters reported on 16 October that SoftBank is weighing a purchase of US security-services provider Allied Universal, a transaction that could value the company at roughly USD 18 billion. Those discussions were described as preliminary, with neither a final decision nor a purchase price in place, and SoftBank declined to comment to Reuters. The figure is therefore an order of magnitude for a possible deal, not an agreed offer.
Friday's debt retirement and dividend follow a session in which Asian equity markets advanced, with AI-linked stocks having carried Wall Street's gains, according to AP.
