SoftBank Group stock climbed 2.6% on Tuesday, riding a broader wave of strength in artificial-intelligence names that has lifted equity markets worldwide. The move had little to do with anything the Japanese conglomerate said about itself. Instead, it reflected a sector-wide rally that gathered pace after gains on Wall Street, with AP describing AI-related stocks as the engine behind the global advance.

Sentiment toward Japanese AI-linked shares also drew support from reports that Anthropic had filed for an initial public offering. It was the second straight session in which SoftBank featured among the winners of an AI-driven push across Asian bourses — AP had already flagged the company in that group the previous day.

A Malaysia Blueprint, With Caveats

The other catalyst cited in press reports was political rather than corporate. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that Masayoshi Son, SoftBank's founder and chief executive, has identified locations for a proposed US$50 billion investment spanning artificial intelligence, technology and data centres. Dow Jones reported on Monday, citing Anwar, that Kuching in Sarawak and peninsular Malaysia had been earmarked for the plan.

SoftBank itself stopped well short of confirming the figure. The group said it is examining opportunities in AI and digital infrastructure in Malaysia, but declined to verify either the total sum or the timeline attached to it. That leaves the US$50 billion as Anwar's characterization rather than a committed investment pledge from SoftBank.

Bond Retired in Full, Dividend Declared

On the corporate side, SoftBank closed out one piece of housekeeping on Friday. It reported the complete early redemption and cancellation of its euro-denominated senior notes, which carried a 2.875% coupon and had been scheduled to mature on 6 January 2027. No bonds from that issue remain outstanding, according to the company.

The same day, the board approved an interim dividend of JPY 5.50 per share, for a total distribution of JPY 31,346 million. Payment is set for 2 December 2026.

Allied Universal Talks at an Early Stage

Reuters reported on 16 October that SoftBank is weighing an acquisition of Allied Universal, in a potential transaction that would value the US security-services provider at roughly US$18 billion. Those discussions were said to be at an early stage, with neither a final decision reached nor a purchase price agreed.
