A single week at SpaceX has delivered the kind of split-screen news flow that makes the company so hard to value: a battlefield restriction that rattled defense customers, a sweeping regulatory filing in Texas, and a headline-grabbing giveaway from Elon Musk that lifted the stock.

Shares rose 3.2% to EUR 134.14 today, with media coverage of Musk's pledge to hand every child in the United States one SpaceX share next year cited as the main driver of the advance. How the distribution would actually work was left unsaid. The gain leaves the stock roughly 32% below its 52-week high, a reminder that investors are still pricing in near-flawless dominance of the satellite and launch markets even after a difficult stretch.

Starlink Limits Draw Attention From Kyiv and Washington

The most sensitive item came last Wednesday, when SpaceX reportedly throttled Starlink service on military terminals moving faster than 160 kilometers per hour, a step Ukrainian officials said disrupted drone operations. Reuters identified SpaceX as the service provider behind the restriction.

A day later, Reuters reported that White House officials had instructed Pentagon leadership to limit Ukrainian access to Starshield, the military satellite system. Who ultimately made that call remained unclear. For a company whose government contracts underpin its revenue base, the episode raises awkward questions: if militaries worldwide conclude that channel availability depends on shifting political winds or murky chains of command, lucrative defense work becomes harder to count on.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

Expansion Plans Meet Regulatory Reality

Ambition, meanwhile, shows no sign of slowing. SpaceX has proposed conducting as many as 456 Starship launches and 912 landings per year at its Starbase site in Texas. The Federal Aviation Administration opened an environmental review of the application on Wednesday and has yet to grant final approval, with public hearings expected to follow.

Two weeks ago the company agreed to pay $8 billion in cash for Grain Management's nationwide 800-MHz spectrum portfolio, subject to FCC approval. It also secured authorization for 15,000 direct-to-device satellites. The scale is striking, but local residents and environmental groups are likely to push back harder as launch cadence climbs — a pattern in which SpaceX races ahead strategically only to run into regulatory and ecological limits that could slow the pace.

Launch Cadence Stays Busy

The operational core continues to deliver. On Thursday a Falcon 9 lifted a classified payload for the U.S. Space Force from Vandenberg Space Force Base. A day earlier, on October 13, SpaceX flew its 35th commercial resupply mission for NASA, carrying more than 6,300 pounds of cargo to the International Space Station. On October 12 it sent 27 Starlink satellites into orbit from Vandenberg.

Those missions provide dependable returns, yet the next leg of growth rests on shakier footing than in prior years. Management will publish third-quarter 2026 financial and operating results after the U.S. market close on October 20, followed by an audio-only webcast at 15:30 Central Time — 16:30 on the U.S. East Coast.

Between the terminal throttling and the tug-of-war over Starshield, the message is plain: SpaceX is no ordinary technology company. Anyone buying the stock is buying the geopolitical risk alongside the rockets, and until Washington and SpaceX define their security relationship clearly, the risk-reward balance argues for caution.
