SpaceX Spectrum Move Exposes Deutsche Telekom's US Dependence

Deutsche Telekom shareholders had little time to prepare for Friday's session. The Bonn-based carrier's stock tumbled 8.6% to EUR 24.70, dragging the broader European telecom sector down with it, after SpaceX agreed on Thursday to acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management to advance direct-to-cell connectivity from orbit.
The deal, first reported by Reuters, landed hardest on US network operators. Verizon and AT&T both came under visible selling pressure, and the pain traveled across the Atlantic through T-Mobile US, in which Deutsche Telekom holds a 54% majority stake. With the American unit having served as the group's primary growth engine in recent years, the market's reaction was swift and unforgiving — a reminder of how tightly the DAX heavyweight's valuation is tethered to its US operations.
A Question of Margins, Not Just Headlines
The sell-off crystallizes a debate that has been building among investors: does a satellite entrant genuinely threaten T-Mobile US's margins, or is the market overstating the risk? The US business generates the lion's share of the group's operating profit, meaning any shift in market share or pricing dynamics feeds straight through to the Bonn balance sheet.
Established American carriers have poured tens of billions into terrestrial networks for years, infrastructure that delivers high bandwidth and reliable connections in dense urban areas. Whether satellite-based spectrum can replicate that capacity in the mass market remains a point of contention among industry analysts. Investors must weigh how quickly an announcement translates into a genuine economic threat to subscriber numbers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Friday's close left the stock just 4.9% above its 52-week low of EUR 23.54. Should sentiment in the US mobile sector deteriorate further and the shares break decisively below that floor, a prolonged period of weakness may lie ahead.
Europe as a Counterweight
On the home front, the picture is steadier. Deutsche Telekom continues to push its fiber rollout, reporting on October 6 orders for fiber connections covering seven million housing units alongside EUR 800 million in planned network investment. In Munich, working with Stadtwerke München and M-net, the company announced Wednesday the completion of fiber connections for several tens of thousands of residential and commercial premises.
The group is also deepening its content offering. It secured exclusive media rights to Germany's 3. Liga from the German Football Association through the 2030/31 season, covering live broadcasts of all 380 matches per season plus relegation playoffs.
AI Savings and New Revenue Streams
At its October 5 investor day, management reaffirmed its annual guidance and medium-term financial targets. Artificial intelligence and automation are central to the efficiency drive: the company aims to cut indirect costs by roughly EUR 2.5 billion by 2030 compared with a 2023 baseline. Outside the US, Deutsche Telekom expects AI-related enterprise revenue of about EUR 250 million in 2026, scaling to roughly EUR 800 million by the end of the decade.
Goldman Sachs adjusted its price target for the stock on October 5, trimming it to EUR 38 from EUR 40 while keeping a Buy rating. Management is also leaning on buybacks to support the share price: under the current repurchase program, the company acquired a further 3,720,584 of its own shares between September 28 and October 2.
November 5 as the Next Inflection Point
The next decisive test is already scheduled. Deutsche Telekom will publish its third-quarter 2026 financial results on November 5, when management must not only demonstrate the strength of the European business but also provide the capital market with a grounded assessment of developments surrounding T-Mobile US. Until then, the debate over the US competitive landscape is likely to remain the dominant force shaping the share price.
