Standard Lithium's Offtake Book Now Tops 20,000 Tonnes — but the Tape Tells a Different Story

Smackover Lithium's amended Trafigura deal lifts potential offtake to 20,000 tonnes a year, yet Standard Lithium shares sit 2% above their 52-week low.

Standard Lithium's joint venture has quietly built one of the more substantial customer backlogs in the junior lithium space, yet the equity continues to trade as though none of it exists. That disconnect was on full display this week, as Smackover Lithium — the partnership between Standard Lithium and Norwegian energy major Equinor — widened its existing supply arrangement with commodities trader Trafigura, even as the stock sank to within a whisker of its 52-week low.

A bigger Trafigura book, and a target left in the dust

Under the amended terms announced Monday, the joint venture can now sell Trafigura up to 4,000 additional metric tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate each year, on top of the 8,000 tonnes already locked in under the original ten-year agreement. That lifts the ceiling on the Trafigura contract to as much as 12,000 tonnes annually, with the fixed payment obligations intact.

Stack that against the 8,000-tonne-per-year deal struck roughly a month ago with LG Energy Solution, and Smackover Lithium's potential offtake commitments now reach 20,000 tonnes a year — comfortably past the 18,000-tonne annual mark the partners had originally set as their goal.

Company statements frame the expansion as a means of completing the customer side of the equation and keeping the debt structuring process moving. Three export credit agencies are currently conducting due diligence on the planned project financing package, according to media reports.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Standard Lithium?

Why offtake paper matters before the first shovel hits the ground

In mining, long-term purchase agreements are the price of admission for large bank facilities — lenders want to see contracted revenue before they sign off on nine-figure credit lines. That makes this week's amendment less a marketing exercise than a piece of financial plumbing.

The partners are also laying the groundwork on the ground. According to media reports, the company is working with Southern Arkansas University and South Arkansas Community College on training programs to build a local skilled workforce. Construction is expected to generate around 400 jobs, with roughly 100 permanent positions once operations begin. First dirt is scheduled to be turned in early 2027.

Management reaffirmed its timeline at the Lytham Partners Fall 2026 Investor Conference, sticking to a final investment decision later in 2026 and first commercial production in 2029.

The market isn't buying the story yet

None of that has translated into share price support. The stock closed Tuesday at EUR 1.59 in German trading, down 1.2% on the day and sitting just 2.0% above its 52-week trough. Since the start of the year, the decline has reached 60%, while the trailing twelve-month loss stands at 45%.

The pressure isn't company-specific. Rising US Treasury yields, a firm dollar and softening Chinese lithium prices weighed on lithium equities across the board earlier in the week, sapping demand for the entire sector.

What remains is a gap between the industrial progress being logged in Arkansas and the skepticism priced into the shares. The confirmation that a final investment decision is still targeted for 2026 is the milestone that matters most from here — until the full financing package is sealed, the project carries execution risk, and investors appear content to wait for the formal green light before re-engaging. Broader sector dealmaking, such as Titan Australia Mining's A$333 million all-cash takeover of Global Lithium Resources, suggests strategic appetite for lithium resources hasn't disappeared — it simply isn't showing up in Standard Lithium's quote.
