Sweden's Longest-Ever Strike Ends Quietly: Tesla Buys Out Last Remaining Union Members

Sweden's IF Metall union announced on 13 August 2026 that it is suspending its industrial action against US electric vehicle maker Tesla, effective 19 August 2026. The decision comes after the company offered severance packages to every remaining striking union member, leaving the union with no one left to represent on the picket line.
What began on 27 October 2023 as a push for a collective bargaining agreement has now gone down in Swedish labour history as the longest strike the country has ever seen — a total of 1,021 days. Yet the original goal remains unmet: Tesla still refuses to sign a collective agreement, a stance it has maintained throughout the conflict despite waves of sympathy actions and periodic escalation.
A Strategy of Attrition
Tesla's approach was methodical. Rather than negotiate, the company systematically bought out striking workers, offering financial settlements to remove them from the workforce entirely. Roughly 80 employees were ultimately paid off in this manner. With the final four members now having accepted such packages, IF Metall concluded there was no longer any basis to continue the action.
The union's leadership did not hide its frustration. The tactics employed by the American automaker were described as unprecedented — practices that IF Metall argues have been effectively outlawed in Sweden since the 1930s. Tesla, for its part, maintains that its approach is fully consistent with the core principles of the Swedish model, though the company has declined to disclose either the total sums paid or the precise number of buyouts.

Veli-Pekka Säikkälä, collective agreement secretary for the LO trade union confederation, acknowledged that the buyout strategy made it impossible to sustain the strike. He called the outcome a defeat for IF Metall — but stopped short of declaring it a failure of Sweden's broader collective bargaining system.
Lessons to Be Drawn
The union has signalled that a thorough review of the conflict and the tactics deployed will follow, with an eye toward preparing for future disputes. Within the labour movement itself, however, there is also criticism directed inward — at the striking workers who accepted the severance offers in the first place.
The end of the strike does not mark the end of Tesla's troubles in Sweden. The company's market position has deteriorated sharply over the course of the conflict. The Model Y was Sweden's best-selling vehicle in both 2023 and 2024, but 2025 told a very different story: registrations plummeted 67 percent to 7,252 vehicles. Whether that collapse stems from the prolonged dispute and the public sympathy actions that accompanied it, or from broader shifts in the electric vehicle market, remains a matter of industry debate.
