Take-Two Rewrites Its Xbox Terms as NBA 2K27 Faces a Cautious Wells Fargo

Take-Two Interactive has quietly reset the contractual plumbing behind its Xbox business. A long-term licensing agreement with Microsoft, disclosed on September 28, took effect on September 17 and replaces the publisher's previous Xbox licensing arrangements rather than sitting alongside them.
Under the filing, Microsoft pays prevailing wholesale prices and/or agreed revenue shares for digital products and content it sells. That dual structure matters: it distinguishes between a straight price per product and a cut of the revenue that product generates. For shareholders, the practical takeaway is that Take-Two now has a durable contractual framework governing how it gets paid for digital sales made through Microsoft — a question separate from how any individual title performs.
Zynga Adds Words, 2K Adds a Season
Product news has arrived on two other fronts. Zynga, the wholly owned publishing label, said on October 8 that it is expanding the dictionary in Words With Friends with more than 25,000 playable words. The update also brings revised definitions and a feature letting players flag words from inside the game. It is an enhancement of an existing title, with concrete changes spelled out — not a report about a possible release date.
At 2K, the second season of NBA 2K27 tips off on October 16, timed to the start of the NBA campaign. The same date brings a Windows PC Store release, alongside GOAT Builds, fresh rewards across The City, MyCAREER and MyTEAM, a new patch and added incentives for squad play. The company is pairing wider distribution with new offerings for people who already own the game — and post-purchase engagement is exactly what investors are watching. The announcement describes content and distribution steps, not revenue already booked.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Take-Two Interactive?
Wells Fargo Trims the Basketball Math
That push lands in a segment that has been losing momentum. Wells Fargo expects NBA 2K unit sales to fall 10% year over year, and cut its growth assumption for recurring consumer spending from 4% to 1%. The note was published yesterday. The caution therefore extends beyond the initial sale of the game to the ongoing spending of its players.
Even so, the firm kept its overweight rating and its $300 price target on Take-Two. There is no contradiction in that pairing: a more guarded view of the basketball franchise sits next to a still-positive assessment of the company as a whole. The new season content does not by itself erase the risks Wells Fargo flagged.
Recurring Spending Is the Real Scoreboard
The stakes are easy to see in the numbers. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Take-Two's recurring consumer spending slipped 1% and accounted for 84% of net bookings. Player retention, in other words, touches the bulk of the business — which is why a basketball season update functions as more than a product bulletin. It offers a tangible data point for judging that business, though it does not yet prove an improvement.
Management, for its part, has held its fiscal 2027 net bookings guidance at $8.0–8.2 billion, even as individual analyst estimates for the current quarter turn more conservative.
A Firm Date and a Loose Rumor
The next fixed checkpoint comes on November 9 after the market close, when Take-Two reports second-quarter results for fiscal 2027. The period ended September 30. Separately, media outlets reported Tuesday on a possible PC launch for Grand Theft Auto VI in the first quarter of 2027, citing four anonymous industry sources — a press report, not a company announcement.
The distinction is the one investors keep having to make. The Xbox agreement and the Words With Friends update are confirmed. The PC launch remains unverified. And the earnings date is the next hard appointment on the calendar for anyone trying to put a number on the stock.
