Tesla Board Panels Weigh SpaceX Merger as Q3 Results Loom
Published on 10/21/2026 at 19:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deTesla shares moved higher today as investors weighed two very different catalysts arriving on the same day: word that independent board committees are exploring a tie-up with SpaceX, and the company's third-quarter 2026 results, due after the closing bell.
The stock gained 3.9% on the session, with Reuters linking the advance to news that a merger is under review. In pre-market trading the shares had been up 1.8%, a move that could not be pinned squarely on the merger reports, since the looming earnings release was also in play.
Committees Formed, but No Deal on the Table
Elon Musk said yesterday that Tesla and SpaceX have set up special committees of independent board members to examine a possible combination. He called a merger "a good idea," while cautioning that nothing is assured. Because of his conflict of interest, Musk said he will not take part in the committees' deliberations.
Shareholder approval would also be required, Musk noted — meaning the panels now studying the question cannot by themselves deliver the majority needed. No specific merger terms or agreement have been announced. The distinction matters: the committees establish a framework for review without prejudging its outcome, so the share-price gain reflects expectations rather than any settled economic terms.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Tesla?
A Regional Signal From California
A fresh read on the underlying business came from the California New Car Dealers Association, whose report published yesterday counted 43,994 Tesla vehicle registrations in the state during the third quarter of 2026, down from 52,005 in the year-earlier period.
That decline describes a regional vehicle market, not group-wide financials. Neither Tesla's total revenue nor its profit can be inferred from California registrations alone — a separation worth keeping in mind when the quarterly report lands.
Two Yardsticks, Far Apart
Analyst actions in recent days have underscored how widely views on Tesla diverge. Cantor Fitzgerald reaffirmed its overweight rating yesterday and kept its $485 price target, staying positive going into the earnings release.
Tesla at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Jefferies took a more cautious line. On October 12, Philippe Houchois confirmed a hold rating while lifting the price target to $400 from $350 — a reminder that a higher target does not amount to a buy call. At the far end sits GLJ Research, where Gordon L. Johnson reiterated a sell rating on October 15 with a target of $24.86.
Separate Questions for Investors
Today's report, followed by a management Q&A webcast at 4:30 p.m. Central Time, addresses how the business performed. The SpaceX review concerns a possible change in corporate structure whose completion Musk has explicitly flagged as uncertain. Investors are best served treating the two as distinct: a potential transaction says nothing on its own about earnings power or the road ahead, while the quarterly figures give the next hard benchmark against which those scattered analyst views can be measured.
