Thyssenkrupp: A One-Day MDAX Cameo for Accelis, Amundi's Trim Below 3%, and JPMorgan's Cautious 17-Euro Call
Published on 10/25/2026 at 20:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deThyssenkrupp shareholders are about to witness a piece of index mechanics with no precedent in the current restructuring cycle: tk accelis, the soon-to-be-listed materials business, will join the MDAX on 28 October 2026 for a single trading session. Index provider STOXX confirmed the arrangement, which Dow Jones reported in corrected form. The purpose is narrow and technical — keeping the index representative through the spinoff — not a permanent promotion.
51 Members for One Session, Then Back to 50
At the opening bell on 28 October 2026, the MDAX will temporarily carry 51 constituents instead of its regular 50. By the close of that same session, Accelis is out again. Investors should read this for what it is: a technical accompaniment to the transaction. It implies neither lasting index membership nor any verdict on the economic quality of the materials unit. Index inclusion and corporate valuation are separate questions and deserve separate treatment.
The spinoff itself takes effect on 27 October 2026. Under the plan, Thyssenkrupp shareholders will receive one Accelis share for every 20 they hold. The parent is not walking away, though — 49% of the Accelis shares go to investors, while Thyssenkrupp retains 51%. That majority stake means the materials business will keep shaping the parent's own valuation well after its debut on the floor.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?
A Financial Holding by 2030 — and a Steel Question Still Open
The listing forms part of Thyssenkrupp's broader conversion into a financial holding, a transformation targeted for completion by 2030. Steel is next in line for separation, with the parent intending to keep no more than a minority interest in that business. On that front, Ursula Gather, head of the Krupp Foundation, has backed the examination of a possible carve-out of Thyssenkrupp Steel. Her stance matters because the foundation is the company's largest shareholder, but it is neither a resolution nor an execution — the review stage is where the matter stands.
Amundi Slips Below the 3% Mark
Shareholder registers have been shifting as well. Amundi disclosed on Thursday that its total position in Thyssenkrupp had fallen from 3.24% to 2.96%. The notification draws a distinction that is easy to miss: directly held voting rights accounted for 2.90%, with instruments adding a further 0.06%. A change in the aggregate position, in other words, does not equate to a sale of directly held stock on the same scale. The relevant threshold was crossed on 19 October, and other financial institutions have also reported lower aggregate positions during the month. No single motive or clear cause for share-price moves can be inferred from these filings alone — operational expectations remain the heavier weight in any assessment of the stock.
JPMorgan Lifts Its Target, Keeps Its Distance
Those expectations got a modest nudge on 15 October, when JPMorgan raised its price target on Thyssenkrupp from EUR 15 to EUR 17 while leaving the rating at "Neutral." Analyst Dominic O'Kane pointed to anticipated steel price increases and the prospect of accelerating earnings. The upgrade came with caveats attached: O'Kane saw little room for positive surprises in the upcoming quarterly reports, pairing better longer-term earnings prospects with restrained near-term expectations. He placed the potential acceleration in the fourth quarter and into 2027 — forecasts rather than reported results. Whether the expected price increases actually feed through into improved profit is the test that matters.
Earnings Remain the Real Scorecard
Index mechanics aside, Accelis will be judged on its operating performance. A separate listing does not substitute for evidence of growing earning power. In fiscal 2024/25 the materials business generated roughly EUR 11.4 billion in revenue and an adjusted EBIT of EUR 132 million. Building a stronger earnings base from there is the decisive question — and because Thyssenkrupp intends to keep its majority stake, it is a decisive question for the parent's investors too. Smaller reported shareholder positions do not, by themselves, signal deteriorating business prospects. The one-day MDAX stay settles the technical handover; the economic development of the retained stake is what will settle the longer-term valuation.
