TUI Stock Breaks Above Key Moving Average as Capacity Gains Offset Geopolitical Risks

The travel giant's shares have staged a convincing recovery in recent sessions, climbing 8.17% over the past week to trade at €7.36, as a technical breakout and structural market changes combine to lift sentiment. The rally comes despite ongoing instability in the Middle East, a region that would normally weigh on tourism stocks.
Technical Breakout Signals Shift in Momentum
The stock has decisively breached its 100-day moving average of €6.91, a level chart watchers treat as a buy signal. It now sits comfortably above the 50-day line at €7.03 as well, having reclaimed the psychologically important €7 mark earlier this week. The shares had touched a 52-week low of €6.11 in late April, but have since staged a steady recovery.
The next major test lies at €7.62, where the 200-day moving average forms a significant overhead resistance. A sustained move above that level would effectively neutralise the downtrend that has been in place since the start of the year. The relative strength index stands at 59.9 on one reading and 57.4 on another, both in neutral territory, suggesting there is room for further gains before the stock becomes overbought.
Market Consolidation Delivers Structural Boost
Operationally, TUI is benefiting from a shakeout in the European travel market. The insolvency of competitor FTI last year has allowed the world's largest tourism group to expand capacity in key destinations including Greece, Turkey and Egypt. Industry estimates suggest TUI has absorbed a significant portion of the demand that would have gone to its rival, improving load factors across its hotel and airline segments.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TUI?
The company has reported roughly 7.9 million bookings for the current summer season. Demand for western Mediterranean destinations and the Canary Islands has been particularly strong, with many travellers opting for these alternatives over eastern Mediterranean itineraries affected by regional tensions.
Hedging and Cruise Operations Provide Earnings Support
The geopolitical situation in the Gulf region remains volatile, with recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz drawing attention. However, TUI has hedged a substantial portion of its jet fuel requirements for the summer at more favourable prices, insulating margins from short-term oil price spikes. Analysts point to pricing power as a key variable — if the group can pass higher operating costs through to customers, the impact on margins should be contained.
The cruise division continues to perform strongly, with average occupancy rates exceeding 90% in the first half. The recent launch of Mein Schiff Flow, a new vessel in the InTUItion class, adds to capacity in this premium segment, which management views as a key profit driver. The traditional tour operator business faces more intense cost pressure.

Barclays Lifts Target as Earnings Season Approaches
Barclays recently raised its price target on TUI to €10, maintaining an "overweight" rating. The bank cited an improved balance sheet structure and the potential for rising cash flows as reasons for optimism.
Investor attention now turns to the third-quarter results, expected in August 2026. The market will be watching whether higher bookings and expanded capacity have been sufficient to offset additional costs stemming from the geopolitical environment. TUI has guided for adjusted EBIT of between €1.1 billion and €1.4 billion for the full year. Consensus estimates point to a dividend of roughly €0.16 per share for fiscal 2026, which would mark a return to payouts after the crisis-driven suspensions of previous years.
