UBS Group AG has raised its holding in Wienerberger to 4.09% of voting rights, up from 3.83%, according to a mandatory disclosure filed Thursday. The increase rests largely on financial instruments, with direct share positions accounting for only a smaller slice of the package. The move comes as institutional investors watch the Austrian building materials group reposition itself following a string of operational setbacks.

Guidance Cut Tied to Weak September Construction

At the root of the gloom is Wienerberger's downward revision of its full-year targets. Management now expects operating EBITDA of EUR 640mn to EUR 650mn for 2026, citing a weaker-than-anticipated seasonal recovery in construction activity during September. The shortfall has also bled into the summer quarter: for Q3, the company projects revenue of EUR 1.2bn to EUR 1.3bn and operating EBITDA of roughly EUR 170mn to EUR 180mn. According to APA reports, those figures fell short of analyst expectations.

The pressure stems from a soft international residential construction market, felt most acutely in key territories including the UK, the US and Canada. Running alongside that demand weakness are elevated costs for energy, raw materials and logistics, which continue to weigh on margins. The hoped-for late-summer pickup never materialized, exposing how quickly the earnings base can be squeezed when expenses climb.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?

In response, Wienerberger has announced an accelerated cost-reduction program and a strategic review of its business units, moves aimed at adapting to the altered market conditions.

Shares Near 52-Week Low After 49% Slide

The equity has borne the brunt of the operational disappointment. Wienerberger closed Friday at EUR 15.60, leaving it down 49% since the start of the year and hovering just above its 52-week low of EUR 15.03. The scale of the decline has forced analysts to recalibrate, though not to capitulate.

Berenberg's Harry Goad trimmed his price target to EUR 19.00 from EUR 25.00 on Friday while keeping a Buy rating. Goad pointed to the tough operating environment and, per APA, cut his 2026 earnings-per-share forecast to EUR 1.09 from EUR 1.49. Leaving the recommendation at Buy signals a view that the valuation already discounts much of the bad news — even if the market's caution remains palpable, with few hard signs of a meaningful earnings recovery yet.

November 12 Looms Large

The next real test arrives on November 12, when Wienerberger publishes detailed results for the first three quarters. The company also plans to unveil specifics of its strategic review and accelerated cost-optimization measures that day. For investors, the date should reveal whether the announced cuts are sufficient to steady profitability in a difficult industry climate — and whether the lowered guidance can hold.
