UBS Rides Swiss Market Wave as Deutsche Bank Lifts Target and Legacy Cleanup Accelerates

UBS shares gained 2.4% to EUR 42.96 as Deutsche Bank raised its target to CHF 47 ahead of Q3 results due October 28, 2026.

Swiss equities found their footing on Friday, and UBS was among the biggest beneficiaries. The bank's shares climbed 2.4% to close at EUR 42.96, outpacing the SMI, which advanced 1.1%. Easing geopolitical tensions and softer oil prices provided the tailwind, lifting sentiment across Zurich trading floors without any company-specific catalyst to account for the move.

The gain pushed the stock comfortably above its 200-day moving average of EUR 40.78, a level it has now consolidated its position over. Yet the backdrop for investors remains layered: daily market mood is only one input, with strategic overhauls and regulatory wrangling doing at least as much to shape the medium-term picture.

Deutsche Bank Turns More Constructive

Fresh analyst coverage added to the positive tone. On Wednesday, Deutsche Bank Research raised its price target on UBS to CHF 47 while reiterating a "Buy" rating. Analyst Benjamin Goy pointed to the bank's operating momentum, forecasting a 23% jump in pre-tax profit for the third quarter.

That projection lands as investors across Europe brace for a wave of interim reports from the region's financial institutions. UBS has scheduled the release of its official third-quarter 2026 figures for October 28, 2026 — the date that should settle the question of whether Goy's optimism is borne out.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying UBS?

Shedding Non-Core Operations

While the market waits for those numbers, management is steadily working through the assets inherited from Credit Suisse. Earlier this month, the bank announced the full early redemption of outstanding callable senior notes totaling JPY 8.3 billion. The paper, carrying a 0.904% coupon and originally issued by Credit Suisse Group AG with a 2027 maturity, has an optional repayment date set for October 27, 2026.

A separate disposal targets the fund administration business. UBS has agreed to hand the former Credit Suisse fund administration operations in Switzerland and Luxembourg to Northern Trust, expanding an existing partnership between the two firms. The deal marks UBS's complete exit from the fund administration segment, part of a broader effort to slim down the group structure and reduce complexity in the wake of the Credit Suisse takeover. Completion is targeted for the second quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.

Capital Rules and a Restless Shareholder

Not everything on the agenda is within the bank's control. Roughly two weeks ago, UBS warned that a decision by Switzerland's Council of States would tighten capital requirements further should it survive the remaining parliamentary process. The prospect of stricter equity rules has kept investors debating the group's long-term capital allocation.

Activist pressure has added a sharper edge to that debate. Major shareholder Artisan Partners has urged the board to examine relocating the bank's headquarters outside Switzerland in light of the looming regulatory hurdles. UBS itself has not resolved on any such move.

Until the October 28 report lands, macroeconomic developments and European market trends are likely to remain the dominant forces steering the shares.
