UBS closed out September with USD 13.2 billion in cumulative gross cost savings, management reported on 28 October, and expects to reach almost USD 13.7 billion by the end of 2026 — a year-end figure that remains a management expectation rather than a delivered number. The same quarterly update showed a net profit of USD 2.7 billion for the third quarter of 2026 and a return on hard core capital (RoCET1) of 14.8%.

Those headline numbers landed alongside net new money of USD 55.1 billion in Global Wealth Management, and a share buyback programme the bank has been accelerating. How large that buyback gets, and how fast it runs, depends on what Swiss capital regulation ultimately demands, according to UBS.

A Ten-Quarter Streak Ends

Vontobel analyst Andreas Venditti flagged the soft spot on Thursday: on underlying pre-tax profit, UBS failed to beat consensus. Before that, the bank had cleared expectations for ten consecutive quarters. RBC Capital Markets took a different view of the equity, lifting its price target to CHF 50 from CHF 44 on Friday while reaffirming its "Outperform" rating — the higher mark came without any change to the investment verdict.

Cost discipline extended to headcount. Bloomberg reported that UBS cut roughly 200 roles in London, hitting Wealth Management and Investment Banking among other areas.

Takeover Chatter and a Regulatory Compromise

The stock had drawn attention earlier in the week, with the midweek rally partly fading by Thursday. Media reports linked the strength in bank shares to the US midterm elections and to speculation around Morgan Stanley — including an unconfirmed claim, traced to "Wall St Engine," that Morgan Stanley could acquire UBS's overseas business for USD 138 billion. No confirmed deal stood behind it. A compromise proposal on Swiss equity capital rules, reported by Bloomberg, was cited as a further factor.

The regulatory question cuts both ways. A proposal in the Swiss National Council could reduce the extra capital UBS must hold for its foreign subsidiaries, though media reports suggest the potential effect is still open. The National Council's economic committee is due to discuss the capital rules for UBS on 23 and 24 November. Reuters reported on 29 October that the Swiss government is examining the impact of stricter capital rules on UBS in the event the bank relocates its headquarters abroad, with further regulatory consultations expected in November.

Stake Sale and a Wage Signal

Away from capital, UBS reported on 2 November that its stake in Bang & Olufsen had fallen below five percent, disclosing 4.66% of shares and voting rights. On the domestic economy, the bank published its 2027 salary survey on Tuesday, covering just under 400 Swiss companies; the findings point to a restrained wage round despite brighter economic prospects.
