UBS Trims Renk Stake Below 5% as Berenberg and Goldman Back the Gearbox Maker

UBS cut its Renk voting rights to 4.57% from 5.36%, as Berenberg and Goldman Sachs both rate the stock Buy with targets of EUR 72 and EUR 65.

International institutions kept reworking their exposure to Renk Group through late September, with mandatory disclosures from the Augsburg-based transmission manufacturer revealing a fresh round of position adjustments. The stock finished Friday's session up 1.2% at EUR 40.79, a modest gain that leaves the shares hovering just above their low for the year.

UBS Slips Back Under the Reporting Line

The headline change came from UBS. In a filing published Friday, the Swiss banking giant reported that its total voting rights in Renk had fallen to 4.57%, down from the 5.36% previously on record. Financial instruments account for 4.06% of that remaining holding. The threshold crossing that triggered the disclosure occurred on Wednesday.

The move caps a stretch of active tinkering around the 5% mark. Just days earlier, UBS had pushed above the statutory reporting threshold on 23 September, and filings throughout the week showed the bank repeatedly adjusting its position on either side of the line. Market participants attributed some of the midweek pressure on the share price to the reshuffling of voting-rights stock by the major holder.

BlackRock has been rebalancing as well. The world's largest asset manager disclosed a total voting rights stake of 4.13% in Renk in the middle of the month, split between 3.35% in direct voting rights and 0.79% held through instruments. Such institutional rotations often reflect hedging of market exposure, and the fast-moving environment in Europe's defence sector is likely to have weighed on the decisions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

A Transatlantic Tailwind

The strategic backdrop has shifted in Renk's favour. On 16 September, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth signed a letter of intent at the Pentagon aimed at drawing German defence suppliers more deeply into NATO procurement. Renk is seen by media reports as a potential beneficiary on the supply side.

That cooperation offers a medium- to long-term demand base for chassis and drivetrain components. How quickly the governments' declarations of intent translate into firm orders remains the pivotal question for how the SDAX group is valued from here.

Analysts Diverge on the Near Term

Opinion among the research houses is split. Berenberg analyst Chris Armstrong kept his "Buy" rating on Friday with an unchanged price target of EUR 72, and the firm continues to list Renk among its favourites in the aerospace and defence space. The analysts point to the company's operational setup and the sector's full order books as evidence of substantial remaining upside for the gearbox specialist.

Goldman Sachs had already moved earlier. On 18 September, analyst Sam Burgess upgraded the stock from "Neutral" to "Buy" while maintaining a EUR 65 target, citing the prior share-price decline alongside clearly foreseeable growth and earnings prospects.

Italy's Tank Programme and the November Test

Procurement activity in Europe keeps shifting. According to media reports, Italy's defence ministry announced on Thursday a programme to acquire new main battle tanks worth more than EUR 5 billion. Whether Renk lands a role as a supplier is an open question.

Investors will get a clearer read on the year so far in early November. The company has scheduled the release of its nine-month report for 5 November.
