Health authorities on both sides of the Atlantic have intensified enforcement of food safety standards, with a string of prominent dining establishments shut down in recent days over vermin infestations and sanitary failures. The actions underscore the serious consequences facing businesses that fall short of hygiene requirements, from immediate closure orders in the UK to permit suspensions and fines in the US.
Portsmouth Restaurant Shut Over Mouse Infestation
Portsmouth City Council health inspectors ordered the immediate closure of Galbi Korean Restaurant in Southsea after a routine inspection on July 28. Officials reported finding evidence of a mouse infestation, including droppings on oven shelves, underneath glassware, and in close proximity to open food containers. A cockroach was also discovered in a water container on the premises.
Following the initial inspection, a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was issued to the restaurant. Magistrates formalised the closure on July 30 by signing a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order, ensuring the facility remains closed until health officials are satisfied that the hygiene risks have been mitigated.
Under UK food safety law, such orders are used in the most serious cases where there is an imminent risk to public health. Establishments can only reopen once environmental health officers confirm the threat has been eliminated.
US Enforcement Actions Target Pest Violations
In the United States, several establishments faced similar closures. In Garberville, California, Humboldt County environmental health officials suspended the permit of El Cora Mexican Food on July 31. The inspection revealed both live and dead cockroaches, as well as rodent feces.
The Garberville inspection also highlighted critical food temperature violations. Items such as garlic butter were recorded at 92 degrees Fahrenheit, while grilled onions were measured at 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Meats including asada and chicken were found at temperatures significantly outside safe refrigeration or holding ranges.
In New York City, a Burger King location on Astoria Boulevard was forced to close temporarily following a July 29 inspection by the NYC Health Department. The facility received 49 violation points for issues including filth flies, inadequate handwashing facilities, and unclean surfaces. A follow-up inspection on July 31 showed the establishment had reduced its violation points to 12.
In Los Angeles, the Hollywood establishment Good Times at Davey Wayne's was closed by county public health officials on July 30. The closure was triggered by a vermin infestation that resulted in an 11-point violation. Reports indicate the venue may have resumed operations by August 3.
Birmingham Court Tackles Severe Hygiene Breaches
The Birmingham Magistrates Court has recently addressed a series of severe hygiene breaches in the West Midlands. Taste of Persia, located on Hagley Road, was issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order following the discovery of a cockroach infestation on June 30.
Other regional businesses have faced significant financial penalties for hygiene failures. Kundun Sweets in Acocks Green was fined £25,000 after being found guilty of five charges related to cockroaches and mouse droppings. In a separate case involving large-scale retail, B&M Retail Ltd was fined £2 million for hygiene-related offences.
South Yorkshire Pub Receives Zero Rating
In South Yorkshire, The Bull and Lobster in Bawtry received a zero food hygiene rating following a June inspection by the Food Standards Agency. The report mandated urgent improvements in cleanliness, food safety management, and hygienic food handling practices.
The zero rating is the lowest possible under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, which scores businesses from 0 to 5. It signals that urgent intervention is required and can have significant reputational consequences for hospitality venues.
