The UK investigation coincides with a similar probe in Belgium, where 300 salmonella cases have been linked to eggs from Laerco BV. Reports from late August indicate that these products were distributed to nine different countries.
While UK health agencies have not officially named a specific supplier for the domestic cases, they have confirmed that the suspected eggs are of foreign origin and were primarily distributed to cafes and restaurants.
Within the United Kingdom, regional data shows that England has recorded 199 cases, while Scotland has reported six. Single cases have also been confirmed in both Wales and Northern Ireland. The contamination has sparked an ongoing investigation into the supply chains serving the hospitality sector.
Rising Import Volumes and Safety Concerns
The outbreak has intensified scrutiny of food import standards. Domestic farming unions have highlighted a sharp increase in food imports, noting that UK egg imports have risen by 60 percent since 2021, with exports from Ukraine specifically increasing by 65 percent.
Concerns regarding meat safety have also been raised by agricultural representatives, who are calling for stricter measures on Brazilian imports. This follows reports that salmonella was detected in a large shipment of chicken sent from Brazil to Greece. The value of Brazilian meat imports to the UK has grown significantly in recent years, rising from £3 billion in 2021 to £5 billion in 2025.
In a separate regulatory development, the UK government has extended organic poultry derogations until July 2027. The measure, which was originally scheduled to expire at the end of December 2026, allows for the use of limited non-organic protein feed for younger birds. The UK and Belgian cases are part of a broader series of international salmonella alerts. In the United States, several unrelated outbreaks have prompted widespread recalls. One investigation into jalapeños sourced from Sinaloa, Mexico, has identified 431 cases and 57 hospitalizations across 32 states.
Additionally, a recall was issued for eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services in Texas after 98 people were sickened across 17 states. These products, sold under brands including Country Morning and Simple Truth at retailers like Kroger, carried sell-by dates between July 20 and August 17. In California, the Food and Drug Administration conducted tests at a farm in Ramona where 23 people fell ill, leading to the potential depopulation of 10,000 hens. The agency is also tracking a separate outbreak of Salmonella Newport involving at least 84 cases from an as-yet-unidentified source.
