Emergency services across England responded to multiple industrial fires over the weekend, forcing residents from their homes and raising fresh questions about fire safety at UK waste and storage facilities.
Hazardous Blaze Near Oldham Forces Mass Evacuation
Fire crews in Greater Manchester were called to an industrial premises on Wellington Road in Greenfield, near Oldham, at around 7:30 BST on Sunday morning. The building — identified by local reports as the Sachets factory unit — was found fully alight.
Because the incident was classified as a hazardous materials fire, responders set up a strict exclusion zone. At least 45 homes along Wellington Road and Knoll Close were evacuated as a precaution.
A nearby Tesco superstore was also cleared and temporarily closed over concerns that toxic fumes could drift from the site. Specialist environmental units were deployed to monitor air quality while ten fire engines and various specialist appliances worked to contain the blaze.

Warehouse Collapses in Harwich
In a separate incident in the early hours of Sunday, a major fire destroyed a warehouse at Bathside Bay in Harwich. Essex Fire & Rescue Service received the alert at approximately 3:36 BST.
Around 35 firefighters attended the Premier Labellers facility on Stour Road, where the main structure suffered a complete collapse. Witnesses reported flames rising higher than nearby residential flats, with smoke visible from up to 30 miles away, including from Ipswich and Felixstowe.
While the fire was eventually brought under control, residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed to avoid smoke inhalation.
Recycling Sector Under Scrutiny After Corby Blaze
These incidents follow a significant fire earlier this month at the Earlstrees Industrial Estate in Corby. On August 10, a blaze involving 500 tonnes of recycling waste broke out at the Recycle Force facility.
