Valneva Drops UK Appeal as Analysts Keep Faith in Lyme Pipeline

Valneva won't challenge the UK's IXCHIQ licence withdrawal, a marginal hit as Stifel and Portzamparc reiterate buy ratings and focus shifts to Lyme.

Valneva has chosen not to contest Britain's withdrawal of its chikungunya vaccine licence, a decision that lands alongside fresh analyst backing and a capital structure update. The French biotech confirmed it will forgo any legal challenge to the MHRA's ruling, while Stifel and Portzamparc both reiterated buy ratings on the stock.

The MHRA revoked the UK marketing authorisation for IXCHIQ following a benefit-risk review by the Commission on Human Medicines. According to Valneva, that assessment rested on safety data that had already been examined previously — no newly identified safety signal was involved. Distribution of the shot in Britain had in fact been halted months earlier amid weak demand from travellers, and with no doses left in circulation, the company faces no recall costs.

Management characterises the financial fallout as marginal. UK sales account for just 1% of Stifel's sum-of-the-parts valuation, and Valneva expects the revocation to have only a minimal effect on group revenue. Approvals for the product remain intact across the European Union, Canada, Brazil and other marketed territories.

Pipeline Value Shifts to Lyme Candidate

Attention now settles on VLA15, the company's Lyme disease vaccine candidate, which analysts regard as the true driver of the investment case. In the Phase III VALOR trial, the shot demonstrated 73.2% efficacy against confirmed cases from 28 days after the fourth dose. The medical need is substantial: Valneva cites 476,000 annual cases in the United States and 132,000 in Europe. Stifel anticipates the European review will wrap up in the third quarter of 2027, with regulatory decisions on the Lyme programme expected within the next twelve months.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Valneva?

Chikungunya itself has been documented in more than 110 countries since 2004, and Valneva is now leaning harder into endemic regions. A Brazilian pilot programme has already administered the vaccine to over 61,000 people without fresh safety concerns, while roughly 187,000 doses have been given worldwide.

Price Targets Diverge From Share Performance

Stifel's price target stands at EUR 7.50, while Portzamparc sees fair value at EUR 4.80 — both well above the current quote. The shares slipped 2.1% yesterday to EUR 2.52, yet traded at EUR 2.55 on Friday, a gain of 1.3% that leaves the stock 25% above its 52-week low. Since the start of the year, however, the equity has shed 32% of its value.

Recent operational milestones continue to colour the broader picture. About a month ago, the European Medicines Agency validated the marketing application for the Lyme vaccine, after which the stock fell 12.9%. The completion of the Nantes site sale, also roughly a month back, coincided with an 8.3% decline. Earlier still, half-year results had lifted the share price by 6.2%.

Share Count and Voting Rights Disclosed

Separately, Valneva provided an update on its share capital on Monday. As of the 30 September 2026 reference date, the company had 189,771,237 ordinary shares outstanding. Total voting rights, including dormant rights, stood at 204,365,399.

With the UK chapter now closed and no appeal in the works, the durability of approvals outside Britain — and the pace of the Lyme programme — will shape Valneva's path from here.
