Viking Therapeutics: A $547.8 Million Bet That Obesity Patients Will Trade Weekly Shots for a Pill
Published on 10/08/2026 at 19:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe obesity-drug story is entering its unglamorous second act. The first wave of enthusiasm fixated on dramatic weight loss; the conversation now turns to the harder questions of chronic care — how to hold onto results once they are achieved, which delivery formats patients will actually tolerate for years, and who ultimately foots the bill. That shift in emphasis is the backdrop against which Viking Therapeutics must now prove that its lead candidate, VK2735, amounts to more than a supporting player in a field dominated by multibillion-dollar pharma giants.
Truist Securities offered its verdict on that question yesterday. Analyst Joon Lee reaffirmed his buy rating, a move that looks unremarkable on its face but lands at a telling moment for the biotech's risk-reward profile after a turbulent stretch.
The market, for its part, is keeping its distance. At a current price of EUR 25.70, the stock sits 18 percent lower since the start of the year. Much of that weakness traces to the hangover that typically follows heavy dilution — and since Viking closed its twin financing moves just over a week ago, the shares have shed another 10.8 percent. Yet the company's fundamental direction, in this view, justifies only part of that skepticism.
A Balance Sheet Built for the Long Haul
The capital raise that soured sentiment involved 9,035,714 new common shares priced at USD 35.00 apiece, alongside senior convertible notes carrying a 2.00 percent coupon and maturing in 2032, for a total volume of USD 258.75 million. Gross proceeds came to roughly USD 575.0 million, translating into an estimated net inflow of about USD 547.8 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Viking Therapeutics?
For existing holders, the dilution was palpable. From the company's vantage point, though, the move was strategically sound. In drug development, where capital intensity is brutal, a well-stocked treasury is the currency that matters most — it is what allows clinical programs to reach the finish line without the constant pressure of short-term refinancing. Management has effectively purchased years of operational freedom, and the near-term pain borne by legacy shareholders is the price of that independence.
Where the Pipeline Stands
The decisive factor for future performance remains the pipeline built around VK2735, a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist. The foundation is already in place: on September 22, management released encouraging topline data showing a placebo-adjusted weight loss of 22 percent at 33 weeks on a weekly 17.5 mg dose. Those figures underpin a maintenance regimen based on monthly or biweekly administration.
Building on that, Part 2 of the maintenance study is now underway. Roughly 195 obese adults, following a 21-week lead-in of weekly injections, will be switched to daily or weekly oral tablets, less frequent injections, or a placebo. That fork in the road is where the drug's commercial future will be decided, since oral formats and extended injection intervals are seen as the keys to keeping patients engaged in day-to-day treatment.
The path to solid answers, however, is a long one. According to media reports, the trial's primary objectives are safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics, with actual weight change captured only on an exploratory basis. This step therefore does not yet demonstrate that oral maintenance therapy works. Add the timeline — first results are not expected until 2027 — and the question becomes whether a biotech developer can weather a multiyear slog on the public markets without damage.
A Marathon, Not a Sprint
Valuation has sharpened accordingly. In European trading the stock changes hands at EUR 26.00, a 35 percent discount to its 52-week high — a gap that captures the sober reassessment now underway. Measured against that high, the shares sit 36 percent below, depending on the session's quote. The market is pricing in both the long wait until the next major readouts and the enlarged share count.
Early euphoria has given way to the recognition that drug development remains a marathon. Viking Therapeutics holds the financial wherewithal to run it. For investors, that means patience is no longer a virtue but the entry ticket. The odds, on balance, still favor the upside — even if the road to 2027 stays volatile. Those betting on breakthroughs in this indication should not let short-term valuation discounts cloud their view.
