Voestalpine Apprenticeship Intake and Donawitz Dust Study Share the Spotlight as Shares Retreat
Published on 11/08/2026 at 06:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deVoestalpine shares gave up 3.0% on Friday as a broad European pullback, triggered by steep losses on the US tech-heavy Nasdaq the previous session, weighed on the Vienna market. The steelmaker ranked among the session's bigger decliners in the Austrian capital, alongside Lenzing and Verbund, according to dpa-AFX.
Environmental Report Draws a Fine Line on Dust
Attention also turned to the group's Donawitz site, where a provincial environmental assessment published on Friday reached a nuanced verdict. The study, conducted for the province of Styria, found that limits for fine particulate matter and heavy metals around the Voestalpine works in Leoben were respected. Coarse dust deposition, however, repeatedly exceeded permitted levels at several monitoring points in Donawitz.
Dry conditions, heavy truck traffic and the handling and transport of bulk materials were named as possible contributors. The report called for further investigation into the causes of the exceedances and recommended the use of wet sweeping machines. Voestalpine, for its part, is expected to identify the source of the dust and introduce countermeasures.
The findings drew a clear distinction between the fine-dust and heavy-metal thresholds, which were met, and elevated coarse dust at multiple measuring stations, where the study also recorded a significant increase at three sites near the company's facilities.

Furnace Conversion Takes Shape
Separately, the company reported roughly a month ago that assembly of the electric arc furnace at Donawitz was largely complete, with cold commissioning already under way in some sections. In the first half of 2027, production at the site is slated to shift partly to electrified steelmaking. Once fully operational, the company has held out annual output of around 850,000 tonnes of CO?-reduced steel — a figure that applies to full capacity, while the announced conversion covers only part of production at first.
On the emissions front, Voestalpine Stahl Donawitz had said on Tuesday that it had made headway in cleaning the exhaust air from the electric arc furnace, with additional components of the extraction system fitted in the preceding weeks.
New Intake Meets a US Trade Hurdle
The group also staged its apprentice day at its Linz headquarters on Thursday, gathering 380 trainees from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. As the new training year began, Voestalpine took on 311 new apprentices in Austria.
Voestalpine at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Looming over the commercial picture is a preliminary US anti-dumping ruling on oilfield pipes issued about two weeks ago. The US Department of Commerce set security deposits of 47.21% on such imports from the Voestalpine group, affecting Voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co. KG. A final determination is still pending.
Investors now look ahead to 11 November, when Voestalpine is due to publish its results for the first half of the 2026/27 financial year.
