Voestalpine Waits Out US Pipe Ruling as Donawitz Dust Data and Furnace Progress Take Shape
Published on 11/08/2026 at 04:23 | Editorial boerse-global.deVoestalpine shares gave up 3.0% on Friday, closing at EUR 40.06 as a broad retreat swept European equity markets. Traders turned risk-averse after a dramatic selloff on the US tech-focused Nasdaq the previous session, with the Austrian steelmaker joining Lenzing and Verbund among the bigger decliners in Vienna.
The drop came alongside a pair of operational updates that sketch out the group's twin tracks — trade defense abroad and decarbonization at home.
Washington Leaves Pipe Duties in Limbo
The US Department of Commerce on October 29 set a preliminary dumping margin of 47.21% on voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co. KG, tied to the anti-dumping proceeding on Austrian OCTG pipe. A security deposit was fixed at the same level. At voestalpine's request, the final determination has been pushed back, and the department extended the provisional measures for up to six months. The margin therefore remains part of a preliminary process rather than a settled outcome.

Donawitz Dust Study Draws a Fine Line
In Styria, the regional government published the findings of an environmental assessment for the Donawitz site. Limits for fine particulate matter and heavy metals around the Leoben operations are being met, according to the report. At several measuring points in Donawitz, however, the study repeatedly recorded exceedances of coarse dust deposition. It cites drought, heavy traffic and loading and transport activity as possible causes and recommends further investigation into the source of the overshoots. The findings explicitly separate the fine-dust and heavy-metal limits that are being respected from the elevated coarse dust fallout at multiple locations.
Electric Arc Furnace Nears Completion
Roughly a month ago, voestalpine reported progress on the electric arc furnace at Donawitz. Assembly was largely finished, and cold commissioning had begun in some areas, the company said at the time. In the first half of 2027, production there is due to shift partly to electrified steelmaking. For full operation, the group has held out annual output of around 850,000 tonnes of CO?-reduced steel — a figure that applies to full capacity, while the announced switch covers only part of production at first.
Brussels Lobbying and a Linz Apprentice Gathering
On Thursday, Reuters reported that more than 100 European companies, voestalpine among them, had signed a joint appeal warning of potential extra costs from proposed reforms to the EU emissions trading system. The burdens could land before energy-intensive sectors are able to decarbonize sufficiently, the signatories cautioned. That same day, voestalpine said 380 apprentices from Austria, Germany and Switzerland gathered at its Apprentice Day in Linz, and that it had taken on 311 new trainees in Austria at the start of the new training year.
Investors now look to November 11, when the company is scheduled to publish results for the second quarter of its 2026/27 fiscal year.
